in 1S0J. This company passed
into the hands of the Cul
umbia Southern Irrigating Com
pany, which is owned by a nuiulirr
of prominent capitalists cf Tart
land. The company and the land
have ber n in 1. ligation for feveral
year?, as the Columbia Southern
failed t keep its contracts with
the fartnr-r who took lan J on the
project. The trouble came whin
the company found it could not
put enough water on the land, ar.d
there was also a lack if transpor
tation facilities. With the two
railroads building up the Deschutes
the surveys rhow that one line will
oe within tnree and the other six
miles ol the j rojoct. The project is
watered br the Tumalo Crwk
which empties into the Deschutes
A rerervoir to contain 5)0,000
acre feet of water i prejee'ed
There will be a dam 70 feet high,
foiming a lake covering 1500 acres
Into this reservoir the flood waters
will go, and this water can be used
later to supplement the natural
flow of the creek. F!y means of the
reservoir the project is expected to
solve the problem and make the
land highly valuable. This con
servation of water can bring from
12,000 to 18,000 more acres within
the scope of the water, bringing
the lo'al acreage up to 43,000.
froviuons have been made for
the lettlers now on the project
The ft rmrs can either make a new
eonlrjct, pacing an increase, or
they can cancel their old contracts
and rxe.ve their money back.
Ten yearn are allowed for paying
for the land?. A first payment is
wanted, and the second year no
payment need be made, the com
pany desiiiDg to give the farmers
time in which to get something
from the lands. Six per cent in
terest is charged on deferred pay
ments, but those who want to pay
the full price at once and save the
interest are at liberty to do so.
When 8 per cint of the lands are
sold, the company, under its con
tract, must crgani23 a water users'
association, and one share of stock
must be issued to each acre to the
farmer.
