CAMELS HARBOR HATRED.
Will Wait Until an Opportunity Ar
rive For Revenge.
The Arab who has angered a camel
will throw his clothes upon the
ground, and the Infuriated beast after
stamping on them snd tearing them
asuuder with Its teeth goes on its
way, and the driver Is thereafter quite
safe, as It seems to be an axiom with
the camel that no roan shall be put In
peril of life twice for one offense.
The camel Is stupid savs when an
gry and then seems to become almost
preternatural In carrying out Its venge
ful designs. Palgrnve relates the fol
lowing story of a camel's revenge.
which serves to Illustrate this point:
A lad of fourteen bad conducted S
large camel luden with wood from one
vllliige to another at a half hour's dis
tance. As the snlmal loitered or turn
ed out of the wsy Its conductor struck
It repeatedly and harder than It seem
ed to have thought be bad a right to
do; but, not ftr.iMng the occasion favor
able for taking Immediate quits, It
"bode Its time.' That Urn was not
long In coming.
"A few days later the same lad bad
to reconduct the beast, but unladen, to
his own village. When they were
about halfway on the road and at
some distance from any habitation the
camel suddenly stopped, looked delib
erately round In every direction to as-
suro Itself that no one was In sight
and, finding the road clear of passers-
by, made a step forward, seized the
unlucky boy's bead In Its monstrous
mouth and, lifting him up In the air,
flung bim down again on the earth
with the upper part of bis skull com
pletely torn off.
"Having thus satisfied Its revenge.
the brute quietly resumed its pace to
ward the village, as though nothing
were the matter, till some men who
had observed the whole, though unfor
tunately at too great a distance to be
able to afford timely help, cams up
and killed If London Telegraph.
Why He Drowned.
Describing the stringent police reg
ulations of Berlin, a citizen of that
city by way of illustration told the
following story:
"Schmidt and Krausa met one morn
ing In the park.
"Have you beard,' says Schmidt,
the sad news about Muller?
" 'No, says Krauss. 'What Is it?"
'Well, poor Muller went boating oa
the river yesterday. The boat cap
sized, and be was drowned. The wa
ter was ten feet deep.'
'But couldn't be swim?
"'Swim? Don't you know that all
persons are strictly forbidden by the
police to swim In the river.' "Phila
delphia Record.
Not Mentioned by Herodotus.
Xerxes was meditating upon his
good luck in having been made king
by bis royal father in preference to
the eldest son.
"Still," he said, "if the succession
had been determined by a primary
election I would have got it just the
same. Naturally everybody would
have marked an X opposite my name."
Subsequently, however, the Greeks
gave bim the double cross at Plataea.

LIGHTNING AND SHIPS.
Veeeele Are Struck More Frequently
Than I Supposed.
In aplta of the popular impression to
the contrary, ahlpa remote from the
land are seldom damaged by lightning,
although some of tbo moat swa In
spiring displays of atinoepherlc elec
tricity are frequently witnessed by
those on board of them.
Standing rigging and even parts of
the running gonr are now made of
steel wire, and thla substitute for the
old fashioned bemp aerves the purpose
of lightning couductor when the ship
Is not fitted w ith such an aid to safe
ty. The electric current la conveyed
down the wire rigging aud reaches the
sea through the vessel's metal hull.
Damage occurs only If the current be
interrupted on Us way down. In a
comparatively largo proportion of In
stances the fore royal truck Is struck
by lightning, that of tha main leas fre
quently and the mbuten least of tha
serious casualties under this
bead occurred to warships snd mer
chant vessels in the 'days of wooden
hulls and beineu rigging. In July,
1S02, as thirteen sailing vessels of the
East India compauy were trying to
round the cx In the vicinity of Algoa
bay, homeward bound, two of them,
the Britannia aud the Bombay Castle,
were struck by lightulug. The fore
mast of each was soou enveloped In
flames, and the masts bad to be cut
away In order to save the ships and
their combustible cargoes, A heavy
gale was blowing, the night waa dark,
and the other ships of the Beet, which
were hove to at the time, wore wit
nesses of thla thrilling Incident
Many vessels are now fitted with
llghtuing conductors of approved types
lest the wire rtgglug should fall to
carry off the electric current la May,
ISOd, shortly after a severe thunder
storm, accompanied by lightning and
rain, la 8 degrees south, 87 degrees
east, tha I. and O. steamship Victoria
had a sudden increase of deviation
amounting to 0 degrees In both the
standard and tha wbeethouse com
passes, and later it was discovered that
the lightning conductor on the fore had
fused. The ship must have been
struck by lightning during the storm.

WALL STREET "TIPS."
Boat Place to Plant Them If They
Come Your Way.
A seasoned Wall street campaigner
condenses a Ufa of practlcsl observa
tion In the remark: "Stock market
tips' are, as a rule, founded on noth
ing better than guesswork or pure In
vention. Although usually without
value, openly peddled out to the pub
lic and not posslblo to trace to any
reliable source, tbey coma clothed in
such a garb of mystery snd apparent
Importance that there are always a lot
of 111 Informed persons who will ac
cept tbem and act on them as on gos
pel truth.
"Often these so called tips' are but
the whispered suggestions of some ma
nipulator who was confident that bis
mysterious, semlconfldential hint would
travel and be made the basts of large
buying of some stock he was especial
ly anxious should be largely sold.
"It is told of one great speculative
magnate of the past generation that
when be was approached by tbe pastor
of a rich and fashionable Fifth avenue
church in search of means by which
be could become suddenly rich bs put
bis lips close to the clerical ear and
whispered: 'Buy Pacific Mall. It's a
sure thing. If you lose on it I'll make
good your losses.'
"The pastor departed gleefully. Some
two weeks later bo called at tbe office
of the manipulator and deplored tbe
great financial losses be bad Incurred
In following tne confidential tip.
How much were tbeyf asked Mr. G
and on being told be drew bis personal
check for tbe amount
"The minister took it and after ex
pressing bis thanks hesitated a mo
ment and then said: 'But bow about
my parishioners? You placed no baa
of secrecy on me, and their losses have
been enormous.'
"Tbe financier smiled grimly as be
remarked, T0u see, doctor, those were
the fellows I wss after.'
'This story may bo trus or may not.
but It points a moral. If you get a
tip' on Wall street bury it in tbe back
yard and forget It" Cleveland Leader.
