Mrs. Wickersham, with the as sistance of the girls in the training department, has greatly improved the appearance of her room by adorning the walls with pictures of our noted statesmen and some well known production of Hof miD, Vandyke and Rosa Bonheur. The campus has been plowed and is being leveled, preparatory to fencing. This will add greatly to the appearance of the school. Letters have been received from both Moro and Fossil but nothing definite has as yet been decided but all are agreed that the prelim inary debate should not be hell until after the holidays. We are in receipt of the O. A. C. and the U. of 0. annuals. They are both a credit to their respec tive schools and give prospective students some valuable infor mation. The university of Ore gon one comes out under the title of the "Organa" instead of "Web foot" as formerly. The magazines for the high school have been ordered and the list is as follows: "Review of Reviews," "Current Literature," "The American," "McClure's." "Everybody's," "The Cosmopoli tan", and the "Farm and Home." We are soon to have some new song books for assembly. This will be ranch enjoyed and appreci ated by the students. Atklrtic. It has been nearly two weeks since the students have been on the Basket Ball floor, but practice has begun again with renewed vigor. The Commercial Club, at a meeting held last Tuesday evening voted to rent the hall to the Ath letic Association of the high school for fifteen dollars per month. The students to have the hall from three to five each school evening. The student body, on Thursday, accepted the proposition and thanked the club for its past kind nesses in allowing the students the use of the hall free. They need grading. The city assessment is based upon a property valuation of $179,181. We recommend that one will be levied for road fund, half a mill for the park fund, six mills for the general fund, and IS mills for the fire department fund, which makes a total levy of nine mills for municipal purposes. Upon the propertr valuation above stated this levy will yield the following amounts: Road fund t 479 18 Park fund 239 5'J General fund 2875 08 Fire Department fund.. 718 77 Total amount M312 62 In discussing the city levy it was shown by comparison with other places that a 9-mill levy was very reasonable. Astoria has a 10-mill levy, Baker City 2C$, Medford 17,,". Hillsboro 9 310, Grants Pas 8, Enterprise 10, etc. Theee places, too, are assessed at full valuation of property. The city Marshall made the following report for month ending December 7, 1909: Made two arrests for drunkenness; repaired sidewalk in front of J. If. Haner's place. Repaired the following crosswalks : On Second and B streets, on Second and A streets, A and Second and A and Third. Put in new crocs walks on C and Second. The dam and beadgate of the city ditch was washed out during the recent high water. The Ochoco bridge needs the attention of the city council as the recent high water has washed under the south end to some extent.
