gether and were the man and woman
who ran over Mrs. Real. Beyond
that was the question whether the
killing of Mrs. Real was really crimi
nal, for If the accident took place as
Mrs. Maddux is said to have related
the etory to Miss Nobs, no blame
could be attached to the driver of
the automobile.
The state was thus Impaled on the
horns of a dilemma. If the con
tension were taken at face value, Mrs.
Maddux was blameless. It the testi
mony of Miss Nosa was disregarded
and rejected, the remainder of the
testimony fell far short of being suf-
fleient.
Whether Frank E. Rodman, Jointly
charged with Mrs. Maddux with the
crime of manslaughter, shall be tried
on practically the same testimony is
.a question that the district attorney
will have to decide. Rodman's trial
has been fixed for today. Unlike
Mrs. Maddux, he Is positively Identi
fied ns having been off the Linnton
road the fatal night, but in his case
there is no confession for him to
deny. In view of the way the jury
stood in the Maddux case, there Is
serious question whether Rodman
will be brought to trial.

Dr. Rosenberg Is informed that
there are several cases of typhoid at
the place In Idaho where the family
resided, and he is prone to believe
that the genus of the disease were
contracted before coming to Crook
county. The lack of care in time to
check the disease is given as the
cause of the fatal results to this
family.

A Land WKtrt Woman Are Tyrants.
A missionary of long experience in
Dasutoland has declared that the men
there are much more often HI used by
their heathen wives than vice versa.
The fact is that these women, by their
labor In the fields and their domestic
work, support the men; consequently
the latter are dependent upou tbetr
wives Instead of Its being the other
way about, as with us. and, the field
work making them strong sud vigor
ous, the women are usually quite able
to hold their own If ' 111 used-for In
stance, they sometime bite off their
husbands' ears! However, this does
not make It any easier for a woman to
become a Christian, because then ahe
feels it wrong to assert herself sod
hit back, and thus she Is st the mercy
of her husband, and it Is very little
mercy she gets when she refuses to
comply with heathen customs. Mis
sionary Review of the World.
Old Turkish Customs.
As lonjr ago as 1013 Coryste visited
Constantinople and has left s minute
account of Its manners and customs.
Among other matters he notes that "It
Is the custom that whensoever any Are
ariseth In the city to hang up him In
whose bouse It begtnneth, as now a
cock In whoae house It begun was
hanged up presently after the Are ceas
ed." The Turks themselves, It appears,
were models of good breeding. "The
Turk doth never st the saluting of his
friend at any time of the day or when
ho drlnketh to htm at dinner or aupper
put off his turban, as we Christians do
our hats one to another, but bowetn
his bead snd putteth his right band
upon his breast, so that be utterly dls-
liketa the fashion that Is used among
ns of putting off our hats. Therefore,
when he wlsheth any 111 to his enemy
be prayeth God to send him no more
rest than a Christian's hat"
Gal Iowa Work.
A cnrlous note In "Pepys" Diary re
fers to the unpopularity of hangmen
In those days. Commissioner Pctt,
who bad traveled, told Pepys "how
despicable a thing It Is to be hsng
man in Poland, although It Is place
of credit, and that In his time there
were some repairs to be made of the
gallows there, which was very fine, of
stone, but nobody could be got to mend
It till the burgomaster or mayor of
the town, with all the companies of
those trades which are necessary to be
used about those repairs, did go In
their habits with flags in solemn pro
cession to the place, and there the
burgomaster did give the first blow
with the hammer upon the wooden
work and the rest of the masters of the
companies upon the works belonging
to their trades that so workmen might
not be ashamed to be employed upon
doing of the gallows work."
The Sheep's Nod. j

gave his bucolic host a patronizing

look within.
Ion sec, sonny," he explained, "the
sheep has no Incisors, or catting teeth,
In its upper Jaw. With Its tongue It
makes a ball of grass, and it holds
this ball firmly between the cutting
teeth of the lower jaw and a callous

of the bead, a sharp nod, the grass Is
partly torn and partly cnt, and the
sheep feeds on. The sheep nod Is the
substitute, In other words, for the miss

"An acquaintance of mine bad a
queer experience the other day," said
a man who has not much faith fn any
thing. "A short time ago be was Intro

"My friend didn't think anything
