Irrigation Projects
Near Prmeville
Word from Washington brings en
couragnient that something may le
done with either the Ochoco or
Crooked river Irrigation projects.
Oregon Is one of the largest con
tributors to this Irrigation fund and
has received the least from It. Secre
tary Balllnger feels that the state
has something coming and will make
restitution as quickly as funds lie
come available.
There are two projects near Prine
rille that should receive the attention
fcf the government. Preliminary
surveys have been made aud the
feasibility of both sites lavorably re
ported upon. The Crooked river
project would cover 100,000 acres.
Should It be undertaken by the
government water would be stored
In the two forks of the river by a
dam built just below the junction of
south fork and north fork. Such a
dam would Impound 360,000 acre-feet
of water, enough to reclaim the
acreage stated. The water would
be divided Into distributing canals at
a point about three Miles above
Prinevllle.
Considerable pressure Is being
brought to bear on the department
to secure the construction of the
Ochoco project, which Is capable of
Irrigating about 18,000 acres near
Prinevllle. This project would take
water from a storage reservoir
which can be built to impound the
flood waters of Ochoco Creek some
six miles above Prineville. Such a
reservoir as has been In contem
plation would hold 34,000 acre-feet of
water. The trouble "with this, as
with some other Central Oregon
projects, is that practically all the
laud Is now ln private ownership,
and about 40 per cent of the entire
area is held by the Willamette Valley
& Cascade Mountain Eoad Company.
Before the project could le built it
would be necessary for the road
company to agree to sell its land ln
small tracts, In order to comply
with . the terms of the reclamation
act. This project, which Is com
paratively cheap as to cost, pos
sesses one distinct advantage; it Is
located very near to Prinevllle, which
would furnish market for many of
the products of the Irrigated farms.

Engineers Blast
1000-Foot Span.
A special from Madras to the Journal
dated Nov. 5. says : "AHarriman con
struction crew commenced blasting to
find bedrock upon which to build the
abutments for the large bridge which
spang Willow creek canyon just west of
this place. The brulpe with the ap
proaches will be over 1000 feet long.
The Harriman road has established a
construction camp about two miles
northeast of Madras, w here a deep cat
is to be made through the divide be
tween Willow creek basin and the Mod
Springs neighborhood.
The Harriman line has a few miles of
roadbed completed south of Madras,
and there is also a mile or two of grad
ing completed south of Madras, and
there is also a mile or two of grading
completed in Porter Springs canyon, 11
miles north of here. Most of the com
pleted work was in dirt, and was moved
by team! and scrapers.
Porter Spring canyon is surrounded
by considerable farming country, and to
the east is a large territory devoted to
stock raising. This place will probably
be a shipping point of some prominence
with the completion of the road.
This canyon U about the only place
where water can be obtained by digging
on the Harriman line, after it leaves the
Deschutes river, the line being about
300 feet above and west of the townsite
of Madras. Water is not reached again
until the irrigated country is reached
south of Crooked river."
Application to Enlarge
New Ochoco Canal
W. F. King, J. O. Powell and others
owning lands in the McKay fiat district,
have made application to the state for
permission" to enlarge the canal that is
now being constructed by E. T. Slayton,
T. II. Lafollette and J. S. Vatkins to
irrigate 1000 acres owned by the last
mentioned parties, and if permission is
granted, the canal will be extended a
distance of several miles and enlarged
to a capacity several times that of the
canal now under construction.
While the waters of the Ochoco from
whence the supply will be obtained for
thiB new district have already been ap
propriated for use by the older set
tlers in the Ochoco vallev nroner. it is
the purpose of the new people to utilize
the waters that go to wast every year
between April 1 and May 15.
The character of the lands to be irri
gated is such that it will absorb enough
water in few days to insure good crops
of grain or alfalfa. The land is a deep
rich sandy loam and will permit of irri
gation at least sis weeks sooner than
lands in the valley proper. ,
Nearly 1000 acres will be placed under
irrigation by the latest enterprise, and
the total will amount to siinething
more than 2000 acres, all of which was
considered worthless by many a few
years ago. Under the plan of irrigation
devised for it, the support of twenty or
more families will be possible.

A Surprised Deputy.
A number of years ago the United
States mui'Mhal of western Pennsyl

deputies, who was stationed lu a back

treated him considerately. When they
reached Plttxburg the necessary paper
were not nt hand to commit the prison
er to Jail. The deputy would not take
Jilm to a hotel, because he would have
to pay the bill out of his ow n pocket
Bo he took hlrn to the marshal's office
to pass the night there. The deputy
was sleepy and the counterfeiter suld
he was. Bo the deputy handcuffed his
prisoner to himself and lay down on
the floor beside the steam register. As
Boon as the deputy was asleep tho
counterfeiter took his keys from bis
pocket, unlocked tho manacle and fas
tened the loose end to the register.
'Shea he took the deputy's watch and
fhat money he had and departed.
"Where la your prisoner?" asked the
marshal the next morning, awakening
the deputy.
"Doesn't that beat all?" be replied
as he tugged at his handcuff and
