PRINEVILLE, OREGON Oregon Trunk to Bridge Columbia The Ore$ron,Trunk Railway Com pany, with hem! offices at Vancouver Wash., and with $5,000,000 of capital, today declared 1U intention of doing liusiness in Oregon by filing certain papers with Corporation Clerk Taylor, in the Secretary of State's office. This is the llill Central Ore gon project, and its purposes are set out in the following, which is article 1 of the declaration: m To acquire, construct, equip and operate railroad, telephone and tele graph lines from a point in the state of Washington, off the north bank of the Columbia River, connecting lines oj the Spokane, Portland & Seattle company In the vicinity of Cclllo, Or., thence crossing the said Colum bia River, and by some eligible route to be selected by the board of trustees of the company, up the said Columbia river to the Deschutes river, and up the valley of the De schutes river, and its tributaries, and lna general southerly direction to a point at or near Klamath Falls, In the state of Oregon, with .such branches and extensions as the company may hereafter decide up on." ' Rifled U. S. Mail Pouch for $100 United States Postoffiee Inspector Durand, assisted by a special United States Marshal, succeeded in un raveling a case of rifling the mails Saturday afternoon at Madras. About October 20 there disappeared a registered letter en route from Cul ver postoffiee, between the Madras office and Shaniko, which contained a remittance of funds from the Culver postoffiee. Other registered matter of less Importance was also reported missing at the time but Postmaster Fred Davis of Madras was unable to ascertain the value of any excepting the letter from Culver which, accord lug to reports from that office, con tained currency and gold to the amount of something more than $100. Inspector Durand refused to give out any definite statement when interviewed but it was ascertained that the records of the offices through which the letter passed showed that it went to the Mad ras office and was dispatched from there in usual form to Shaniko In a through pouch that is not opened en route to Shaniko, and when the sack arrived at the railroad town It was without lock, which was a brass one of the usual type, and also minus a part' of the con tents. Because of the fact that the pouch passed through several hands be tween the two points it seemed that it would be almost Impossible to fix the blame of the theft. Willie Craig, the young man who wns carrying the mail from Madras to lleistler. the transfer point to the main line for Shaniko, came to the liiizily station and asked a young lady there to help him count a sum of money, the total of which was suspiciously near the amount rolss iug from the mails. This thread of evidence was followed for a few hours by the officers with the result that young Craig was arrested, charged with rifling the mails. Craig's father is mail contractor from Urixzly to Lamonta and his uncle has the contract from Madras to lieisler, and had his nephew Im ployed when the theft oecured. Hariman Road Wins Right of Way. The General Land Office has ap proved the Deschutes Railroad map covering section two of Its line be ginning at a point 40 miles from the Columbia River, this approval being subject to review In the event of the Columbia Trunk Line protest. Over three-quarters of a mile of this section of the road, the Des chutes right of way conflicts with the right of way of the Oregon Trunk and the latter has the right of pro test if so disposed. About 20 miles f the Deschutes Railway survey is covered by plat map No. 2, extending from a point 40 miles from the mouth of the river to a point CO miles up the river. The conflict mentioned being at about mllepost 41. There the Harriman line crosses the river and from the east side follows the west bank for about one and one-half miles and then recrosses to the east side. The Oregon Trunk Line is located on the west side of the river from the mouth to mile post 73. The place in conflict is just below Sherar's bridge. On the opposite side of the river is located the survey of the Southern Extensions Company aHarriman company that has sur veyed a proposed railway route up the canvon from the Government dam site to Sherar's bridge. ITS 91 From Medford To Central Oregon The Pacific & Eastern railroad, the line now building eastward from Medford toward Crater lake will be extended as rapidly as possible to a connection with either the Oregon Trunk line or the Deschutes railroad, says the Journal, whichever reaches southern Oregon first. John R. Allen of Medford, presi dent of the Pacific & Eastern, Is In Portland arranging for details of the work in connection with his railroad and also trying to secure about 500 additional men to rush the work on the new line. "We have between 300 and 500 men at work now, I believe," said Mr. Alien, "but we want 500 more If we can get them. Our greatest trouble at present Is to secure enough men to rush the work along as rapidly as possible. "It is my hope to have the road completed to a connection with either the Hill or the Harriman De schutes line within two years. It makes no difference to us which road we connect with we are Just as willing to do business with the Southern Pacific as with the Oregon Trunk. It depends upon which line is built first."
