ill Irrigation Project
Continued from page 1.
"howllug" wilderness bus been ho
great, through lock of transporto
tlon facilities,' that no private cor
poration could develop a project and
furnish the farmers with cheap
water.
The Central Oregon farmers have
for years been pleading with the
Government to develop this Crooked
River project, but so little progress
has been made that the Interior has
given up hope of receiving any bene
fit under a public reclamation plan.
This was one of the things that m-vm
pointed out to John F. Stevens,
, president of the Oregon Trunk, when
he made h's mysterious trip through
Oregon under the name of James F.
Sampson, last June and July. And
one of the first steps which the Hill
crowd took after they came out lu
the open was to lay plans for taking
the whole project over from the
Government and develop it us u,
private scheme.
- According to a man who Is close to
the Oregon Trunk and the Inland
Empire Company, the private project
will be" able to supply water to
200,000 acres of land at from S30 to
150 an acre, conveying to tho fanner
perpetual water-rights at that figure.
At $30 an acre, the scheme Involves
about fC.OOO.OOO and at 50 It will
Involve $10,000,000.
What method the Oregon Trunk
people will employ In cutting up
these tracts which have alrendy leen
acquired and which are held under
option and which are Iwing negoti
ated for, cannot le learned. The
price paid for some of the largos
tracts have run from $15 to $25 an
acre. Some of the tracts have cost
considerably more.
The gobblfng up of one-half the
townslte of Madras, with about
2000 acres of good agricultural and
fruit land immediately to the East, a
deal which was negotiated by Vice
President V. D. Williamson some
weeks ago, is taken to Indicate that
Madras Is to tte the terminus of the
Oregon Trunl for the time being. It
is a common point on both the De
schutes Railway (Harrlman) and
the Oregon Trunk, both of which
expect to reach there by the middle
of next Sumnier.

Buggy Upsets Into,
Irrigating Ditch
Charles ilindman of Sisters got his
collar bone smashed to smithereens
Inst Sunday forenoon when his team
became frightened at a motor cycle
on the grade just below Crooked
River bridge and left the road, roll
ing the buggy In which Mr. Hlndman
and his wife were riding, into the
big Irrigating ditch Just below.
Mr. and Mrs. Ilindman had start
ed to their home at Squaw creek
after attending the county fair, and
when they were on the grade met
Roy McCalllster on a motor cycle.
McCallister dismounted and Mr.
Hlndman started to drive past him
when the team made a lunge and
pulled the buggy out of the road
over, the edge of the grade, and the
rig upset and rolled Into the canal.
Mrs. Hlndman was not hurt more
than to receive some bad bruises,
but Mr. Hindman's colar bone was
broken Into a dozen pieces.
He was at once brought bock to
town and is at the home of Mrs.
George Stevens, his step-daughter.

Thinks Grain Crop
Will Douhle
That Central Oregon will, within a
few years, double the cereal crop of the
whole Pacific Northwest is the belief of
Theodore B. Wilcox, president of the
Portland Flouring Mills. When opened
np by the railroads now building, an
immense acreage will be thrown open
to wheat raisers.
"In Central Oregon," said Mr. Wil
cox, "there are millions and millions of
acres of land which, uii1d I am greatly
mistaken in the nature of the toil, will
be excellent for grain growing- without
irrigation. Out of this vast territory
there must be at last 2,500,000 acres
available for wheat. There is as large
an acreage as is now in wheat in Oregon
and Washington. All that is needed to
open np this great territory is a rail
road and with two lines now entering
that section, it will be only a matter of
a short time before the country will de
velop. Nor will the increased yield re
duce prices. With such a condition of
affairs aa now exists, there is no danger
of lessened prices through the ex
ploitation of wheat fields In Central
Oregon."
