Ten applicants took the examination (or forest ranger on Monday and Tues day before Forest Ranger V. F. John son at Pnnevillei , The first day's work covered the written tests, besides the identification of different kinds of gasses, shrubs and woods. On Tuesday th. field tests were given. This included pacing the ' diltance around an irregular tract, saddeling and riding a borse, packing and surveying. Mr. Johnson was assisted in the work by Forest Guard Douglas Ingram. Watching th. applicants pack a horse was on. of the most interesting parts of the examination. A horse, doable cinch pack-saddle, a pair of alforcases roll of bedding, ax, an A -tent and a long rope with a pack cinch fast to one end made up the list that was to be bound together in a compact bnndle that would go up and dcrn bill and through the brush without coming to pieces. The time necessary for this operation was noted and the grades were recorded according to the general efficiency shown in the task. The time consumed by the different men in packing the horse ranged all the way from 8 to 20 minutes. Setting the compass to conform to different readings seemed to puzzle many of the applicants. One applicant was requested to set the compass due east, but instead he set it due west. Another reading required was north 25 deg. west, ' and the applicant set it north 23 deg. east. These little things are f o apt to happen that the applicant I MaW ft Crash Ksstss I Scksel Bosks I Casscra Sssolies j JcwoW D. Wall Passr D. P. Adamson & .Regmar Prices!! Several months mast elapse before the returns from the examination will be received. Those who pass are put on the eligable list according to their rank in the examinations, and are put into the service as fast as the need of more men is felt.
