Opnl City la the name ol a new townslte that Is soon to be put on the market In Crook county. Joseph O. Honaton, representing a Portland syndicate has purchased of Walter Mendenhall of Culver his 160-acre homestead on Yamhill Flat, and the plat of the new city will be Bled with the county clerk within the next few days. The land Is on the line of both the Hill and Harriman surveys for the new railroads, and Is said by those familiar with the lay of things to be one of the finest prospective townslte In Ceutral Oregon. The price paid for the quarter section was t MOO. H Is located on the south east Blopeof Juniper Butte above Opnl Springs on Crooked river, hence the name Opal City. Mr. Houston Is the general man ager of ths Oden Falls development company and while this new venture la not a part of the Oden Falls project the promoters will reserve the water, light and power rights In the deeds of dedication, and expect to supply these utilities from the plant on the Deschutes. Mr. Hous ton Is now In Trinevllle and Is call ing for bids for the construction of tire power dam at Oden Falls. It Is nnilamtnml tltnfc PAIItltV I l lift. mlssioner Bayley may take the con tract for constructing the dam. In connection with the Irrigation project It Is the Intention to reclaim the land on the peninsula between the Deschutes and Crooked rivers. Most all the land embraced in that tract lias already been filed upon by Tortland parties. The new town site Is located just across Crooked river from this land which It Is pro posed to Irrigate. Another feature of the plans which will be of the most Interest to Prlne ville people Is that a preliminary sur vey for an electric railway line will soon be made from Opal City to Prineville. The projected route skirts the base of Haystack moun tain, runs north of Lamonta and swings through the gap below the oil well on the loe of Grizzly, thence across Poverty Flat to Prine ville. Every foot of such a ronte would supply traffic for a line. De velopments in this direction will be closely watched by Prineville people. Editorial Staff Social..... The class of '09 is the first class to thus honor Its alma mater, but we trust not the last one, as we scarcely real ised bow much the pictures of the classes would add to our interest In the old students until we were given one, and now our ouly regret is that there are not more with which to decorate the ussembly hall. The question of Joiuing the Ore gon High School Debating League was voted on In assembly last Fri day. The students were almost unanimously in favor of entering. The triangular plan has beeu adopted by the league. This will not only simplify the plans of the league but will lie a great advantage to the schools entering, as each school will have to work up an affirmative and negative team, thus strengthening both sides. We feel confident of suc cess this year, despite our defeat of last. Committees have already been appointed to choose a question for the try-out debate. The selection of the team is going to be difficult and it will be a hard fought contest. Mr. Myers of Kedmond was a visi tor Friday.
