    Taxpayer Has Worms
Says Mr. Atkinson
Editoh Joi'knai.:
In ymir IxHiie of July S, over 11k
Ignnture of "Taxpnycr" appear an
article concerning a new road iwt
opened. Itneenm Hint Taxpayer I
oinewhat Mhanutl of hi name, and
aj to hi Qualification ft a taxpayer
the chance are that the tnxe he
hna piild Into the Crook county
treasury would not pay hie lodging
In a five-cent houxe for a night; but
we will let that go.
The road connecting the Silver
Lake road and the Crane Prairie
roitd wn an actual neceflty to the
fanner and etockmcn of the neigh
borhood, to the people of the county
and the traveling public, aa was alno
the bridge that Taxpayer eay was
accepted by Cort 11. Alloa and wife
and by Fred Shonqmut and Dink
Atkinson a the Ixnt bridge and
Btralghtent road In Crook county.
A thla taxpayer ray, thin rond
follow the section line and I o
etralght that It would break a
snake' back that would try to fol
low It. Of course onie taxpayers
have walked in straight lines, before
they carne to Crook county that the
crooked flection line are hard for
them to follow and perhaps have
tried to straighten them up by mov
ing witness trees from one place to
another this hs been done on this
so-called crooked road. This per
haps Is what bn made this road so
crooked that thi Taxpayer can not
And his way over it
1 believe every taxpayer and legal
roter signed the petition that was
asked to sign the same, and were all
residents of this road district, and
now when this road Is fiuinlied a
kicker has to open up his head with
a lot of clap-trap about the crooked
ness of the road, that Is run on the
section lines, mwt be hard up for a
Job to kick about, especially aa the
chances are that he is a feather
weight taxpayer.
Why did he not sign his name and
come out like a man and not stand
behind a cognomen that practically
means nothing as It is Impossible to
find out what taxes he pays under
such a name? Is he ashamed of his
name, or doe he fear the coutumely
that will be heaped on him as a
kicker on Improvements to the roads
in this district? It seems to me be
has some worms eating on his
anatomy somewhere, and is some
what peevish about crooked roads
run on section lines.
I want to ask my friend, the Tax
payer, did he ever survey any of the
lines In Townships 20, Ranges 10 or
11? If he did not he will find that
all the section lines do not run
straight with one another, and if he
wants the proof I will take a day or
two and show him how to survey
the section lines In these townships,
and I think he will soon be con
vinced that the Government survey
Is at fault, and not the supervisor,
M. F. Hawthorne, or the commis
sioner, Mr. Bayley, as It is a crime
fr anyone to move any stone, wit
ness tree, section corner or quarter
corner that was made by Govern
ment survey.
In Justice to M. F. Hawthorne I
must say that he acted fair and put
the road on the section line, ignoring
the county surveyor's work when
the surveyor's work left the section
lines and run to the north or south
of the lines established by Govern
ment survey.
If any taxpayer doubts my state
ments in regard to this crooked sec
tion line. It will not take me long to
convince any man that Is reasonable
and who has not made up his mind
not to be convinced. Hoping that
this will meet with the approval of
all the taxpayers vnd citizens of this
district, I remain,
Yours respectfully,
John Atkinson.

Th Kind Captain.
A certain se captain had the repu
tation of being a cruel tyrant, but In
reality b was a kind hearted man, as
the following Incident will prove.
In midooean the cook approached
the captain timidly.
"Captain," he said, "the men are
growiin' about the beef. They say
they cant chaw It nohow. They say
If only fit to mend their set boot
with."
"How much beef are yon gtvln Vm,
cookie?" the captain asked.
"A pound apiece a day, sir," said the
cook.
"WelC a!d the captain gently,
"give 'em half a pound apiece from
now on. I should be orry to force
era to eat what Un't to their taste."
HUGE BUCKET DREDGER.
Largaat Val of Its Kind Uaad ta
Dpin Sum Canal.
In connection with the widening and
deepening of the Sue canal at Port
Said the authorities have recently In
creased their dredging fleet by a new
vessel, which ranks a the largest buck
et dredger afloat. Thla vessel, which
Is named the Peluse. was built on
the Clyde and baa been acquired for
Be it toe in the Port Said roads, whlck
are being deepened.
The r el use has a deck length of 303
feet, with a molded breadth of forty
sewn feet and molded depth of twenty
feet two inches. The deck Is steel
throughout, sheathed with teak, and
there Is a raised forecastle nud pooii.
Propulsion Is effected by means of In
dependent twin screw engines Indicat
ing i.800 horsepower, with a separate
dredging engine of COO horsepower.
The latter machinery Is of the three
crank type placed on the main fram-
LAJWJBST DBEDOXB ITLOAX.
lng. Steam is supplied from three boil
ers each of fifteen feet diameter by ten
feet seven and one-half inches in
length.
A feature of the vessel Is that all
gearing has machine cut teeth. The
auxiliary machinery throughout la op
erated by hydraulic power. Separate
condensing plant la fitted for all ma
chinery. The Lobnits patent hopper
door arrangements are used.
The dredger has been designed to
work between the limits of twenty feet
and fifty feet below water level.
Owing to her large size she navigated
from the Clyde to Port Said in working
condition, being of seagoing design in
the widest sense of the term.
Man's Electrical Rtsictance.
Experiments have shown that the hu
man body between the feet and the
hands has an average electrical resist
ance of about 5,000 ohms when the
hands and the shoe soles are wet and
from 10,000 to 20,000 ohms when hands
and feet are practically dry. With the
last resistance a one two-hundredth
ampere current will pass through the
body if the hand completes a 100 volt
circuit through the earth. In the com
monly used alternating current of 100
volts and 60 cycles per second there
may be difficulty in letting go of the
wire, and such a circuit of 500 volts
la very dangerous, especially If travers
ing vital organs.
Danger From Springs.
In the summer, when so many thou
sands drink from tempting springs in
the woods and on hillsides, a warning
recently given by E. A. Mattel, the
celebrated French explorer of caverns,
should not go unnoticed. Contrary to
a widely prevalent opinion, M. Martel
says that springs of apparently pure
water are In many cases merely the
outflow of surface waters which have
disappeared through fissures, carrying
with them pollution from the soil and
not purified In their passage throngh
the rocks. He thinks that even chalk
Is not an effectual filter for surface
water passing through it
in the Northwest.

Schoolmates.
A conductor sent n new trnkeinan to
put some tramps off the train. They
were riding in a box car. The brake
man dropped into the car and said.
"Where are you fellows golngr "To
Atchison." "Well, you can't go to
Atchison on this train, so get off."
"You get!" came the reply. And as
the new brakeman was looking Into
the business end of a gun he took tlie
advice given hltn and "got." He went
back to the caboose, and the conductor
asked blm If he had put the fellows
off. "No," he answered. "I did not
hare the heart to put them off. They
want to go to Atchison, and, besides,
they arc old schoolmates of mine."
The conductor used some strong lan
guage and then said he would put
them off himself. He went over to
the car and met with the same expe
rience 89 the brakeman. When he got
back to the caboose the brakeman
snld, "Well, did you put them off?"
"Naw; they're schoolmates of mine
too."
An Unfortunate Participle.
A college professor who preferred
the participle "gotten" to "got" tele
graphed to his wife: "Have gotten tick
ets for the theater tonight Meet me
there."
The telegraph operator rendered this
Into "Have got ton tickets." etc.
Mrs. Professor was delighted with
the opportunity of entertaining her
friends and accordingly made up a
party of eight besides herself, whop
greetings to the professor at the ren
dezvous were probably more cordial
than his feeling nntll matters were ex
plained. He now makes an exception
to his customary use of "gotten."
