BOX MANGERS.
Thty Cannot Da Pretty Cltanad and
Should Be Aboliabtd.
Thnt box mongers are mi abomina
tion la lieln appreciated by the ret-out
baru builders. Since It la realised that
they are uot a nevewslty, but a danger,
the let dairy farina are alHillahltig all
tacka and raised Uxee used aa turni
ps m. The objections to having a small
feeding compartment boxed closely
around the cow's head are tlireo the
tot iiwngor cannot U kept clean, and
hence la a disease dlsaenilimtor; It bin
der ventilation, and It preveuta the
cow from feodlug lu a natural position.
With aiimtl corners aud tall aides
the box cannot be sntlnntotorlly swept
nor cleaiHl of the odd temps of feed
which collect Thta accumulating dirt
nul dust becomes moldy aud rotteu
aud attracts tiles uud nits. It la further
harmful lu that It becomes gradually
eaten by the row and I harmful to
her. The box manger afforda a roosting
place for chlckem, whose droppings
become mixed with the cow's feed,
with Injurious effects. Sweeping or
shoveling the waste material from the
tuauger doee not thoroughly clean the
box. but remove ouly tlie very largest
piece of dirt the email artlcle aud
dust remaiuluir Ik-I nl able to da a
much harm as the larger ones.
A cow's mvk Is so formed that eat
Ing take place with the greatest ease
hen the mouth la lowered to the level
of the grouud. If a cow eat without
training during swallowlug abe will
eat aud digest better, and ber health
aud milk supply will protlt accordlng-
Ingly. Therefore the feed Tor a cow
should be placed at her feet aud not a
yard or two up In the air. The hay-
racka placed above the cow s ahouiuer
re entirely wrong.
A cow to be healthy requires all the
fresh air It Is possible to supply. Box
manirera. nartltlou or other boarded
harrier act as obstructions to the easy
flow of air withlu the barn, and hence
seriously check veutllation.
The farmer should not neglect to
adopt the proper feeding trough by
waiting until he builds a new barn.
The old partitions and boxe should
be removed and new feed troughs aud
stanchions constructed. The feed
trough should be Immediately In front
of the stanchion aud upou a level with
the floor. If built of boards. It should
be V shape.
A trough built of cement Is the Ideal.
When such material Is used, the trough
should be concave, without corners, A
square trough of boards or cement
should not be built The corners collect
dirt, and Into them the cow acciden
tally pushes her food, being unable to
lick )t from the angles.
Tho feed trough should be built with
a elope, that water may flow Its whole
length. It should have no partitions or
divisions. Such a trough can be used
for watering the cows, the water from
hose bclu g allowed to enter at the
upper end. flowing aown past eacn
