Madras, Ore., April 1!, 1909. To the Editor of the Jonrnrl: At the next e anion of the county court a petition for a county road will lie iirestMited. U'uiuiiing at a1 point on what Is known ns the Till man Reuter readjust north of La monta nnd running in n northerly direction to the Fred Fisher comity road one mile south of Youngs post office. There will also probably be presented a remonstrance against this proposed road. We, the pe titioners for this road, respectfully ! ask the Journal to give us space to j Bet forth the matter from our view point, as the agitation of this road matter has developed a very ieculiar state of affairs. The petition was prepared by the parties residing on the desired road and signed by those living on or trilntjrv to it. No six-cial effort v, M made in circulating the petition, however, 90 names were stvured nk- ville whenever the occasion or Incli Inir thnt It lie irranted. Manv more I nation demands. A I'ktitioskk. could have been secured, but the time was short and no opposition was expected. The promoters of the road interviewed every land bolder whose place was touched or crossed by the road, everyone of whom favored the road, with one or possibly two exceptions. This one exception opposed the road very bit terly at first, but nfter the matter was thoroughly explained to him. finally agreed not to oppose the road, If some changes would 1 made to suit bis convenience, which was done. Most of the petitioners for this road have no road, and live from one to five miles from any county j road. Natnrally In common with the rest of humanity they desire to get In and out sometimes. This pro posed route Is traveled most of the way at present, but is becoming difficult on the account of numerous gates, and It Is only a question of time until some rancher will close the roadway. It will not only be a great benefit, but a positive necessity to the ranch ers who will be obliged to get in and ont, but will be used by hundreds of others as a shorter and better route to the timber and sawmills from all of the Agency Tlains country. It will also make the most convenient route to Prlneville from thin section, a fact that will lie appreciated by the farmers here If they are obliged to hanl their wheat to Priueville to the mill to get a "square deal.'V as was the case last year. And, lastly, It furnishes abetter and more direct route for all the travel to most of the Central Oregon points. The above reasons for the grant ing of the road also furnish the rea sons for the opposition. A remon strance Is being circulated by the merchants of Madras. While in the remonstrance they may charge the expense and impracticability of the road, the real reason of their oppo sition is that the road, if granted, may be traveled to such an extent that Madras may lose some of the loose change taken from the inland A 1 .1 . .1,. 1. . 1 , .. . travel luaiuuw feovn imuiiu uitu. n town. It is not the desire of the pe- j W titloners to Injure Madras, as that is ; their town, and heretofore most all jjj of them have done their trading 4 there, and they recognize that the town depends upon the nettk-rs rather than upon the transient travel. But many of the people here do not feel called upon to go with out county roads, or to be obliged to go twice the distance to reach a given point, Just to accommodate a j few men who wish to lay tribute on all the travel that goes Into Central ; Oregon, compelling them to spend; an extra half day on the road just In 1 order to go through Madras, so that the barns and merchants there can pick up a few paltry nickles. Now if this road is to be like the remonstrators will probably tell the court, of no use to anyone except those who live on or near it, why not let them have it. It will be the only road they will have, and if they are contented to use it and are mak ing such an effort to get it, they are eurely entitled to It. The cost of this road to the county "will be scarcely anything. There will not be a great deal of work to do, as much of the road Is now open. About f 200 worth of work has been volunteered and signed for, besides the work that Is called for from the petitioners, and since signing the pe tition, many have volunteered work In opening the highway. The people here nre in earnest about this mat ter, and if the road is not granted, It will be hard to make them believe that Justice has not miscarried. Those signing' the reuaoustrnnce are residents of Madras and thote living south and west of there, these for the most part living from 5 to 15 miles from the road aud nre not ac quainted with ltd merits or demerits, but Jiint vigil nt the rotjuift ottliclr morvli.-uits, n It doo not cost uuy thinsMo sij;u u rvmiinstr.uni Tlip ouo oxooptitia rvferrvil ti above that niriwd not to tuiposc the lore lie came in possossum oi ue place -w hore he lives ami through which the rtmil w 111 pass, several of the farmers oIuIiUhI together aud dug a well ami Installed a pump, as this is a place w lur.' w ater can 1h obtained at a lm!ltw depth. These facts make it all the more necessary for the grauting of tliis road. The merchant and press ,if Mad- ras have from time to time referred to Priueville as U ing a hog,' and wanting everything, but we have not yet heard of Frineville trying to make every road renter nt that place In disregard of the rights and convenience of everyone. We con sider that we should have the right and n road to go on-to go t. Trine- j Notice th red hot sjnvials J. SU'wart i Company are offering Saturday. E for j I Flan for .
