The New Scalp
Bounty
Law
There prr to be general lack of
nndcreUnding regrding the provisions
of the new scalp bouuty lw among the
hunters and ranchers of Crook county,
and County Clerk Brown saya that
claimants for the bounties are making
demands on him for bounty warrants in
many cases, when they have not com
plied with the law as to the manner of
presenting their claims. The. law
plainly states what proceedings shall be
taken and for fear that there is not a
full understanding of its provisions we
print herewith sections 1 and 2 of the
act, covering that portion prescribing
the manner of taking the scalps and
hides from the animals and presenting
them to the cbrk :
Section 1. There shall be pail by
the State of Oregon and the counties
thereof as in this act and in the manner
hereinafter provided for the killing and
destruction of the following named
animals, hereafter killed in the State of
Oregon, the following bounties: For
each coyote or coyote pop, $1.50; for
each gray wolf or black wolf, fo.00; for
each gray wclf pup, black wolf pup,
timber wolf or timber wolf pup, 1 2.50;
for each bob cat, wild cat or lynx, 2.00;

Section 2. Any porsia killing any of
the aforeaid animals in order to obtain
the bounty provided t r in Section I of
this act, shall within ix months of the
date of the killing, present to the c wnty
clerk of the county in which said ani
mal or animals, have been killed, the
entire skin of each of said animal or
animals, which skin ii eludes and must
have attached thereto all four of the
paa,or feet, the tail and the skin of
the entire head, including both ears
thereof, eyeholes, and skin to tip of
nose ; and shall at the same time make
and file with the said county clerk an
affidavit which shall be sworn to before
said officer, and which said affidavit
shall state: (1) the kind of animator
animals from which said skin or skins
were taken and the number of skins so
presented; (2) that the county in which
said animal or animals were killed in
is the county in which their skins are
presented for payment of a bounty, (3)
that said animal or animals from which
said skins were taken were not brought
or received, dead or alive, from any
other county or state; (t) that said
animals were killed on or after the first
day of February, one thousand, nine
hundred and nine, and within six
months from the date of making of said
affidavit; (5) that said animal of ani
mals were killed by the person pre
senting such skin or skins in such
county and in the State of Oregon, and
(6) that the same were not fostered or
whelped in captivity prior to the killing
thereof : and in addition thereto there
shall be attached and made a part
therof, the affidavit of a resident tax
payer of said county, aetting forth that
he Is a resident and taxpayer of said
county, giving his postoffice address and
stating that he is personally acquainted
with the applicant ; that he has read
the affidavit of the applicant, present
ing said skin or skins, and that he be
lieves the same to be true in every par
ticular. .
The said county clerk mav, if he
deems it advisable, r quire of such ap
plicant for bounty such other corrobor
ative testimony as to him seems proper
concerning the truth set forth in such
affidavit; provided, that when in doubt
as to the kind of skin or Bkins presented,
whether wpll or coyote, the warrant
shall be.iscued for the lesser bounty.

Mrs. Smith and Liuii expect to leav
this week for Colfax, Wash., where

Mr. Paulson is new purchaser in
our neighborhood and has begun clear
ing for a crop this year.
Alex. Brown has a new house on his
eighty just west of town.
J. 0. Hansen was out to the Tortlind
country recently and came back bring

other evidence of progressiveness that
we are glad to see.
Another achoolhouse has been built
north of town and school will begin to
morrow with Mrs. Elliott, late of the
Shepherd district, aa teacher. An en
tertainment will bo given in the near
future br some of the older ones in the
nature of play entitled "Rescued
Furthjr particulars on the bulletin
board.
Another meeting of prospective tele
phone aubscribets will be held Friday
night.
The ball game this afternoon brought
over quite a crowd of Prinevillains (we
hope the boys will excuse the coinage)
We did not learn the score but presume
the visitors will be glad to furnish it.
Messrs. Ross Hall and brother leave
tomorrow for Spokane for work.
The Methodists had a number of ad
ditions today, but we did not learn who
they were.
Mrs. Irvin was down to church for the
first time lince coming back last fall.
Her many friends are pleased to see her
out once more.
The Rowlee property at Redmond was
lately trans'erred to the Jones Land
Company.
With this letter the present series
comes to an end, as a regular thing at
least. We should like to ice some one
take it up and push it with a little more
vigor than the writer has been able to
give it. There is enough news arouna
this little town to do its pharo towards
supporting a paper here. There are
enough items in view to make several
interesting letters, and they ought to be
reported for the benefit of outside read
ers. The undersigned acknowledges
many favors from the Journal and
should be pleased to see some one
undertake the work who will do better
by it than he has been able to do lately,

Warren Knox had a catastrophe with
his team on the 14th and is now on the
shelf for repairs. Pr. Belknap wis called
the enduing of the accident and found
both lw.es of the left leg broken just
below the knee. Dr. Belknap was called
again Wednesday to dre.a the injured
limb for the second time a.td found an
other break that he had overlooked at
first, the larger bone being broken again
several inches lower down.
