Change Made in
Sheep on Range
Forest Supervisor A. S. Ireland
has returned home from Portland
where he attended a meeting of
forestry officials and sheepmen for
the consideration of matters per
taining to the grazing of sheep in
the reserves. The most important
action taken was the change made
in the sliding scale regulating the
number of sheep to be allowed on
the range. The decision finally
reached will permit of the grazing
of 137,000 sheep in the Defchntes
National Forest this season, as
against 155,000 last year. The first
reduction made cut the number of
sheep down to 116,000, and this
last adjustment is a concession to
flock owners.
The sliding scale is based on old
grazing permits which were issued
to the sheepmen when the govern
ment took charge of the ranges.
It is the policy of the service to re
duce the number of sheep on the
ranges and the first redaction made
provides as follows:
Flocks numbering between 1200
and 2000 were to be reduced 25
per cent. Those between 2000 and
4000 were to be reduced by 331
percent. Those from 4000 head
upward were to be reduced 40 per
cent.
Under the adjustment jtlst
effected at the Portland meeting,
the percentage of reduction will be:
On flocks of 1200 to 2000, 10 per
cent; 2000 to 4000, 17 per cent;
and upwards of 4000, 25 per cent.
Present at the meeting were
Supervisor Ireland, F. L. Kneipp,
assistant forester in the field. H. K.
O'Brien, chief of grazing for Dist.
No. 6, (this diet.) T. P. McKenzie
assistant chief of grazing, Dan P.
Smythe of Pendleton, C. H. Rooper
of Antelope, and Messrs. J. A.
Horn, James Rice and M. J. Fin
layBon, the latter three sheepmen
interested in the range.

M. R. Biggs' Sheep.
Marion Biggs did not meet with
as much success in marketing his
1500 mutton sheep which he
fattened at his ranch during the
past winter as he anticipated, but
on the whole says that he did not
lose anything on the venture and
that he received a good price for
his hay.
Mr. Biggs met with several
adverse conditions just at the time
he shipped which all taken to
gether made the price he received
somewhat less than it would have
been ordinarily.
All of the big buyers were stocked
up full and overflowing, the Union
Meat Company has bought 0000
head and another firm has just re
ceived 5000 more. One or two
carloads seems'tobeall that can be
disposed of to advantage at one
shipment in Portland, and Mr.
Bigg's shipment made seven car
loads. As there are no accomoda
tions for sheep at the Portland
yards at all, the shipper simply
has to uuload his stock and sell it
for what he can get. Mr. Biggs
only received one offer $3.25
and be accepted that.
The report that he was offered
$5.S0 at Shaniko and refused it
was an error. He says he made a
sale to a party at Shaniko at (6,
but that the buyer went square
back on him and he had nothing
else to do but to go on to Portland.
In Mr. Biggs's opinion, when
transportation conditions improve
so that one or two carloads can he
but into Portland at a time, and
more quickly than is possible at
present, that there is good money
in feeding sheep for market on
alfalfa. "I didn't lose at all on my
experiment of feeding the sheep,"
says be. "Of course 1 thought I
ought to have had a better price
than I got for them, but I got a
good price for my hay and the
work of feeding as it was."

ville's best musical talent have

juJgea, this contest will be gov
erned by the same rules as the
declamation contest. The con
testant securing firt place will re
ceive one point, the next two

whose representatives receive
