It certainly has been. The oldest inhabitant has been knocked clear out of the box by the record of the past week. Twenty six and twenty nine below lero is enough to send the shivers down one's spinal column. Yet there is some comfort in read 'ing about the 40 below in Montana and the exceedingly low tempera ture prevailing throughout the en tire eastern states. With the enow storm and exceeding cold weather came mani fold troubles to the stage man. Of the stage lines running into Prine ville there have been numerous difficulties to overcome. Breaking roads and keeping them open has been a herculean task. The Shaniko stage made fairly good time until Friday when it arrived at 8:45 p. m. the delay being partly due to the late arrival of the train at Shaniko the previous night. The snow on Shaniko flat has mantained a depth of almost two feet and at some places the drifts have always been almost twice that depth. The snow on the flat drifts more or less each day and every stage over the road has to break a new road for a few miles at least. Since Friday of last week the average time of arrival of the Shaniko mail has been 6. p. m. or about eighteen hours from Shaniko. From this place to Bend and from Bend to Rosland has been the cause of the greatest amount of worry for the stage men. Dur ing the storm the usual stage team was not able to break a road faster than about two miles per hour, and several times twelve or more hours was required to go from here to Bend. The Rosland stage missed connection with the out going mail several times during the week and five men and rigs were put on the road doing the work formerly done by three. The storm was at its REM THE WINNEK COMPANY See Our 5 CENT BARGAIN COUNTER We have placed upon it numerous uselull little articles which usually sell at 1 Oc Everything on this counter, each 5c I. MICHEL, - Prineville, Oregon highest on Monday.the driver from Silver Lake to Rosland being more than two da vs and nights behind schedule. Every precaution is taken by the stage company to protect its drivers and so far but few "frost bites" have been reported. The driver arriving from Shaniko San day night received the most severe chilling. He had both hands and feet and hia ears frosted. Each driver is provided with a heavy set of robes, and a foot warmer and sometimes two which are kept warm all night They dress iu the best and warmest clothes obtainable and it is only by this means that dangerous freezing is prevented. The cold is not so hard to cope with, however, as the mud will be when the snow melts and everyone connected with the service is look ing forward with dread to the thaw which is sure to come. The train service into Shan ko has been very poor for the past week and but little eastern mail has been delivered to the stages for the past eight days. Tax Levy for 1909. The county court at its January term has made the following tax levy for the year 1909 on the 1908 roll: mills County and State 9 20 General School 3 00 Road Fund (exclusive of Prineville) 2.00 High School (exclusive of School Dist. No. 12) 1.25 Library Fund 0C5 Total tax levy, all purposes. 151 The tax levy was increased a little this year because of the in crease in the state tax and for the further reason that it is question able whether the I). I. & P. Co. are obliged to pay taxes on $369,000, the assessed valuation of their ditches and canals. The supreme court will have to pass on the matter before it can be collected. Our portion of the state tax allowed We are now doing business in our new quarters where we will be pleased to meet all new as well as old customers. Thanking you for past favors and hop'ng to merit a continuance of the same, we re main, respectfully, to the several counties is $H.5?5. The state must raise for its expenses during 1909 the sum of l,6S0,M2.. 35, of which amount $105,090 will be derived from indirect sources, leaving 1275,000 to be raised by the different counties in accordance with the fixed rales of proportion provided by law. Everyone Must Help Destroy Bad Weeds There is a matter which the county court wishes brought to the attention of the land owners of Crook conntv and that is the sub ject of noxious weeds. The court is doing and has done all in its power to stay the destruction of the pests but without the active co-operation of all landowners and citizens generally but little can be done to eradicate the nuisance. It is the thocght of the court that if everybody will help the county can be cleared of noxious weeds in a few years but without this help nothing can stop the onward march of the destructive plant'. Besidss the court objects to pacing out hundreds of dollars every year in its effort to stay the weeds when property owners take so little interest in the matter. It is tiue there is a remedy at law but this method is slow and cumbersome when called into play. The county court feels that it is entitled to the co-operation of every citizen who has the welfare of the county at heart.
