    Erickson' Acquitted of
Horse Stealing Charge
After making a round trip of
some 300 mile and (pending a full
week on the road, after doing a
large amount of detective work as
well as performing the functions of
his office in a creditable way, and
locating and arresting the two de
fendants near Ilarrieburg, west of
the mountains, Sheriff Elkins yes-.
terday saw his efforts go to naught
for lack of evidence in the . case,
against Charles H. Krickson and
Oliver Erickson, father and son,
who were charged with, horse steal
ing by Horace Biggs, the com
plainant. The men were brought
back in the custody of the sheriff
and John Edwards of Gist, placed
on nreliminarv hearing before
Justice of the Teace Sharp, and
discharged after a short hearing in
the office of Prosecuting Attorney

Ackerman To Attend
Teachers' Institute
L.J , . u-
- The Teachers' Institute of Crook
county will bo held at Trineville
September 30 and October 1st and
2d. State Superintendent Acker
man, R. C. French, president of
the Weston State Normal, Trot.
Alderman of the University of Ore
gon and Charles II. Jones of
Salem, editor of the Oregon Teach
ers' Monthly, will be present dur
ing the entire session.
No public school in the county
will be in session during the three
day of the institute. Every
teacher of the public schools is re
quired and earnestly urged to at
tend every tession.
We are anticipating a profitable
and interesting time. All persons
interested in the great cause of
education, and especially the vari

rest and the long trip back to
Crook county as a matter of course
and upon their acquittal the
younger merely remarked:
"Well, we had good company
back."
'So did I," replied the sheriff,
sotto voce.
The horses alleged to have been
stolen belonged to Biggs and were
branded S bar. The Ericksons
pastured twelve head of horses in
Edwards' fields at Gist, and the
latter was one of the witnesses.
Edwards said that none of the
horses he saw either at Gist or
Harrisburg bore the brand men
tioned by Biggs. The Ericksons
took 22 head with them to the
valley recently and Sheriff Elkins
went over there to intercept the
stock alleged to be stolen.
Jack May, Pioneer
Dies at 78 Years
Jack May, an old pioneer in
Crook county, died early Wednes
day morning of paralysis, aged 78
years. He was buried here this
morning by the county.
Bather pathetic is the life story
of this old man, who, perverse
though he may have been in his
declining years, yet was without
aid or comfort from his only son,
William May, who lives at Scio.
William May, it is currently re
ported, is well fixed financially, yet
he would do nothing toward pay
ins the old gentleman's funeral
expenses, it is said, when notified
of the old man's death jesterday
by. telephone.
For many years the son had
wanted the father to live with bim
west of the mountains, but Jack
May preferred to live here. A
year or so ago he visited his son
at Scio, but did not 9tay long, re
turning to the country he loved
best in Crook county. Then, be
cause of advanced years, he became
a county charge, and now after a
long life goes to a pauper's grave.
partments there will be evening
programs, including a lecture by
either Supt. Ackerman, President
French or Ptof. Alderman. Begin
now to plan to attend. Programs
will be sent out as soon as possible.
Sincerely yours,

WINDOM, Culver, Or. 9-10tf
All the recent talk about Alaska
wheat, Durum wheat and other
varieties of the staple recommended
for culture in the arid regions ef
the United States are discounted
by 54 bushels of pure Scotch Fife
wheat which Jess Windom raised
from only half a bushel of seed on
his place in the Haystack country,
near Culver. This 108-fold yield
is remarkable in itself, but when it
is considered that the wheat wiis
raised for seed purposes only the
profit of the grower in a year tor
two will more than repay him for
bis trouble.
Mr. Windom came to Prineville
Tuesday with several bushels xl
this pure Scotch Fife, which is the
purest hard wheat seen in many a
day, scarcely a grain of any other
kind being admixed. Although the
top price for wheat at the Stewart
mill Btands at 55c, Mr. Windom
received 60c for his product, ard
figures as well as facts and actions
invariably speak louder than word.
The grower two years ago picked
over a lot of wheat of badly mixed
varieties and flailed it out on his
barn flcor, carefully selecting the
hatf bushel of Scotch Fife which
now has increased to 54 bushels.
The wheat was raised on a "dry"
ranch, where irrigation i3 never
resorted to, and exemplifies bi tter
than mere talk the potcnt:alitie
and possibilities of the supposedly
arid but exceedingly fertile soil of
Crook count)'. In other words, not
an acre hardly of this rich interior
country but will grow exceptional
crops when the right kind of grain
is sown.
