PREMIUM DEPARTMENT "
THE AMERICAN TOBACCO CO., St Louis, Mo."
STORY OF THE FOUR SKULLS
(Continued from page 1.)
tragedy was over as quickly as it
began, the Warm Springs Indians
taking it as a matter of course and
remaining wholly unpeiturbed.
"Huntington said to Billy Chin
oVi: 'We must secrete these bodies,
Sr..- if they are found by the tribe
vs will be done up.' So the Indi
in? looked around and Eoon re
1 rled they had found a suitable
place in a boggy spring. The bodies
werj taken there one by one and
trampled into the ooze until they
disappeared.
"One of the 'dead' Indiana was
only slightly wounded, however,
and when the trampling process
began with him the cool water and
mud revived him. He sprang to
his feet, a very lively corpse, and
dashed away with the speed of a
deer. The others were after bim
at once and because of his wound
overtook him after running a quar
ter of a mile, dispatched bim; then
carried him back and buried him
as before, this time successfully.
'Never before or since,' remarked
Huntington, 'have I seen such a
pretty foot race, one with such a
stake or one so spirited.'
"The tribe never knew what had
befallen their lost brothers, and
Huntington continued on his way
and made the treaty."
Note The following winter the
Piutes burned Claypool'a cabin up
the Ochoco, and the next spring,
that of 18G9, Mr. Luckey settled in
the same valley above Prineville.
He passed many sleepless night
watching his cattle and scanning
the neighboring hills, when his dog
would run in with hair bristling
and whining low after being half
scared to death by some wild beast
or skulking figures in the darkness.
The country was then what it will
never be again, both a wilderness
and a hunter's paradise. Many a
time did Mr. Luckey and his eight
neighboring settlers shoot deer at
their doors. Game was always
abundant, but was never wantonly
killed until people began to flock
in here.
