CONDON ELECTRIC BEGINS WORK
Announces Intention of Ultimately Building to
Prineville, Howard and Bend
Interior Oregon is to have 2(jt)
miles of electric railroad extending
f.-.itn Condon to Fossil, with
1 ruches into the Dayville district
: Grant county to the John Day
country and then on down to
Tiineville, Bend and the adjacent
great area of present transporta
tion's country. Construction
work on the first 40 miles of the
line began last week at Condon
and will be in operation in time to
handle the wheat crop of 1909
while the other sections will be
pushed to completion as rapidly
as the construction forces can lay
the rails.
Back of the project, the Wasco
County Electric & Water Power
Company, is David Eccles of
Ogden, powerful financial interests
of Oregon and California, and
moneyed men of Central Oregon.
Already $GG0,000 is ready and
waiting for the commencement of
construction work while unlimited
funds are in course of aggregation.
Contract Let
'Men who are interested in the
project say it is a certainty and
that the work commenced will bo
carried out as rapidly as the con
struction can be accomplished.
Mr. Eccles is now in La Grande
on his way to Portland to take
charge of the flotation of the bond
issue of $15,000,000, the engineers
from San Francisco are at Condon
beginning work on the construction
and the contract for 200 miles of
road, the necessary bridges and
power plants, has been let to the
Portland Construction company.
According to the plans of the
promoters of the company the line
will begin at Condon and will run
from there to Fossil. It will have
a branch to Dayville ;n Grant
county and another west to the
John Day river where a power
plant capable of producing 20,000
horse power of commercial elec
tricity will be constructed.
The Fossil line will tap the im
mense coal bed3 south of that place
where it is said that coal equal in
quality to the Rock Springs coal
has been discovered.
A branch will be constructed to
the Muddy creek country past the
Prineville Land fc Livestock
company's irrigated tract and over
the divide on a grade of not more
than thtee per cent. It will tap
the Pine creek valley at Ashwood,
thus making available the great
mining district there.
Power Plant on the Deachute.
A branch will be run from Cross
Keys and a second power plant
will be constructed at the junction
of Trout creek with the Deschutes
river capable of producing 60,000
horsepower of commercial elec
tricity. From Cross Keys the line
will run south to the Agency
Plains, through Madras and on
south to the Bend country.
Another branch will be con
structed eastward near Redmond
to Prineville and Howard tapping
the gold mines of that district.
From these two mining districts
3,000 tons of milling ore will be
guaranteed a day, it being the
present intention to construct a
smelter and reduction works at a
central point when the develop
ment of the project is far enough
advanced.
W. W. Steiwer, George S. Car
penter of Fossil, president of the
company, F. T. Ilurlburt, the
treasurer, are eastern Oregon men
who are interested. The company
is capitalized for $3,000,000 with
an authorized issue of $15,000,000
of 20-year 6 per cent first mort
gage gold bonds. It is to neat this
bond issue that David Eccles, the
Ogden banker, is now on his way
to Portland.
The contract for the construction
of the entire 200 miles of road,
together with the bridges and
power stations necessary, has been
let to the Portland Construction
company.
