" PREMIUM DEPARTMENT, THE AMERICAN TOBACCO CO., SL Louis, Mo, Railroad Hope Brightens (Continued front page 1.) Gerkm? Sues Laidlaw. Railroad men of much experience do not hesitate In saying that the road will be a profitable one- Therefore, those subscribing to the preferred utock will not be donating to the road, but will lie making a good Investment; but they could well afford to donate for the beuefits they will receive from a railroad In this country. Preferred stock will lie Bold for money, material, labor or supplies. If a person desires to pay In wheat or other grain the railroad will accept It at the market rate at the time the road is ready to haul it out. Subscription list are prepared with that end in view. If a man wishes to pay In labor either of him self or teams, he can do bo. A mer chant can pay In supplies; n lumber man can pay In lumber; a fanner can pay In hay or grain. All these things are necessary in construction aud will le as acceptable na money. A man subscribing labor of himself and team could report at the camp for duty. Tentage and food for man and beast would Ite supplied. It certainly would not be a hardship for anyone interested in the road to subscribe four or five months' work if he and his team were fed. It could be arranged so thut he could divide his time In sections, working a month or two months at one period aud the balance at another, taking card of his own affairs in the mean time. A subscriber will le asked to give his bankable notes and the railroad will accept payment for them In the above manner; upon completion of payment of the notes the company will issue its stock at par for the amount of the subscrip tion paid. "I am authorized to say that the D. I. & P. Company will head the subscription list with ?25,000in camp equipment, with all necessary tents, cook outfit, blacksmith shop, scrap ers, tools, steam drills, boilers, etc., and money. "The directors of the Central Ore gon Development Company have promised a subscription of ?25,000 in lumber and ties. "The large grading outfit could In put to work very quickly. "You can readily see how practi cable this plan Is: With grading outfits, labor, supplies, hay, grain, lumber for bridges and ties, all within the power of the eople of this country to subscribe, the road can be completed with the exception of the rails. The sale of bonds will supply them. "An engineering party will be put on the location work within the next two weeks and a complete survey will be made. We have now waited many years for others to build a railroad into Central Oregon and we have no railroad. Jxt us all get together and subscribe as much as we can to the preferred stock. W( can build ready to haul next year's crop if we really want to do so. I know of no other way to get a rail road. Yours very truly, ltoscoK Howard. Threatened with the loss of his home and the improvements he has made on a tract of land in Crook County, J. N. P. Gerking has begun suit in the circuit court against W. A. Laidlaw for $16,CC0 damages, says the Portland Jour nal. Laidlaw is a principal slock holder and general manager of the Columbia Southern Irrigation company, from whom Gerking purchased the land, but he fays Laidlaw ia unable to deliver title without fraud upon the United States government and committing subornation of perjury in making proof. Gerking paid f 6,400 for the land and water right, and he says that with the improvements he has made the place is worth f 16,C00 today. He cleared 100 acres, seeded 50 acres to alfalfa and planted the remainder to trees, berries and vines. He ran laterals for irrigation and fenced the place, only to learn as he says, that the defendant is not able to furnish a good title as it agreed to do as soon as he had finished paying for the place. ' The operations of the Columbia Southern Irrigation company have been under fite for some time, and Gerking's suit illustrates the posi tion of settlers who have in good faith settled upon the lahd and made improvements on it.
