When warm days

Wick Blue Flame Oil
Cook-Stove.
Man-clous how this
atove does away with
kitchen discomforts
bow cool it keeps the
room in comparison with
conditions when the coal
fire was burning. The quick concentrated heat of the

goes directly to boil the kettle or bake the bread, and none
is diffused about the room to overheat it. Thus using the
"New Perfection" is real kitchen comfort. Made in three
sizes and fully warranted. If not with your

IN DEFENSE OF
THE WOMEN
A Culver Corresoondent Takes
Rev. Clarence Wilson
To Task.
E. Ckook Coi nty J oukkal:
The article by the Kev. Clarence
True Wilson in last week's Journal
on Woman's Suffrage seems to me
pretty "rank." Why did not the
antis have It published sooner, so as
to give women a chance to defend
themselves?
Does Rev. Wilson mean to make
the assertion that if a woman in a
club-woman that she is also Immor
al or lacking iu virtue? When we
read of a preacher going wrong, as
we often do, Is the woman iu the
case a club-woman? Far from it.
She is one of the modest "unassum
ing queens'' of some other man's
home!
A woman who would sell her vir
tue for a political office would sell
not mistaken the women of Colorado
I elected a preacher as governor, lias
be done nothing to purity politics Iu
I that state? Does Kev. Wilson wish
us to believe that if he appointed
any women as his aids, clerks, etc.,
that they had to "offer their all at
his shriue" iu order to get the posi
tion? If so. it Is good proof that
politics and religion should not mix
if the reverend gentleman's morals
should fall so low as to cause htm to
prey on women who need the offices,
or rather the salary, so as to make
an honest living for herself, and per
haps her aged parents or her father
less children.
In every county lu Oregon then'
are more or iess women employed In
our court houses, some as assistant
county clerks, deputies, stenogra
phers, etc. The closing part of Mr.
Wilson's argument Is an opeu insult
to each and every one of them. If
the "Dolitical bosses" are so low as
he asserts they are, it is time they
were ousted and decent men were
nut In their places, and, so long as
the women cannot help matters by
their votes It is up to such men us
the Kev. Wilson to show us how it is
to be done.
Tlease give us the names, dates,
etc., of the women who "offered up
tlittralt at the shrine" of the bosses
it you can and dare, and I am willing
to wager no woman ever offered. It
might have lvn demanded of tier by
the man, hut are the women to
litame bectium the men were villains?
tVrtatuly some may fall, but they
sre the one who would fall anyway
no matter whether the tempter were
politician or preacher, according to
the game they were playing and the
amount of the stake.
It Is all bosh about Wing com
pelled to vote, even it they could.
S uae men never go near the polls,
and no women w ould have to vote
against her will. 1 certainly do W
lleve t tint every woman wage-earner
and taxpayer should have the right
to vote. If she has to assume n
man's responsibilities let her also en
Joy his privileges if she wants them.
Iletween the "Marys" nnd the "Mag
dalene" the "Marthas" have a pret
ty hard time of it, nnd are deserving
of all the good things that come
their way but the "Marys" nrv
afraid to let the "Marthas" have
auy privileges, except that of work
ing, for fear the "Magalenes" will
contrive to share them In some way.
:tev. Wilson prates of corrupt pol
itics, yet the only "mud slinging" In
Crook county during this campaign
has beeu his unwarranted attack
upon every working woman whose
education fitted her for some easier
work than breaking her back over
a washtub. Me cannot all lie
"queens of homes" (or
Thrre'a liltli" n raru
Aui many to kct."
It she is fitted to hold a political
ottiee why should she lie den'eil the
right to do so, or be Insulted by
those who know nothing about her.
morally or otherwise. When a
young huly applies to the school
board for a position as teacher must
she "offer up her all"? The argu
nient fits all eases of that kind.
i mu glad the- majority of us have
more faith In the moral decency ol
our men nnd women than the Kev.
Wilson and the autl-suffragists have.
Mautua.

where so many women "club to
