It would be fu tile to try to estimate the value of the rain we got today in dollars and cents. Here's hoping, however, that the Haystackers, and other dry farm ing sections, got more than we did. If they got as much It will do them very well for awhile. The recent election showed some surprises. Who would have thought from the remarks that were made that equal suffrage would lose In this precinct by an even vote of 42 to 42. Either some voted the way they did not Intend or those who favored the measure kept very quiet about It. The vote for prohibition of 63 to 28 was hardly in the nature of a surprise as It has been a dry pre cinct ever since transient ditch labor ers quit voting here. Several ballots came in with the left hand column voted in full but not a scratch found on the right hand side. That must have been for the antis. The single tax proposition got more votes here than anyone seemed to think It would. The day after the election here Iowa gave the direct primary law I He Star Nj I Drilling icie Go. is erecting a plant at PORTLAND, OREGON for the manufacture of their world famous PORTABLE WELL DRILLING MACHINES for water, oil, gas, etc., etc. A moderate amount of money will start yon in a profitable business. OHIO, Its first test We note with pleasure that the republicans has-e stood by their grand old senator, Allison, In stead of endorsing Governor Cum nilns, the so-called progressive re publican, aspirant for his seat. There is the legislature still to be reckoned with, however, and the democrats may turn In and help elect Cummins. Thoirlaw Is somewhat peculiar in thl regard that It provides for no expression of preference for United States senator at the November elec tion, but only at the June primary. While we are writing politics it might be mentioned that the new law, unless the legislature remedies it, will bring the primary nominat ing election on Saturday, which would throw the ballots Into Prine- ville on Sunday. The present law requires the primary to be held on the 45th day preceding the general election. We would suggest as we are now to have Tuesday elections that the 49th day would be a good time. It is a matter for the legisla ture to determine. Items from this place last week mentioning J. Ward Hnrnder should have read Mr. aud Mrs., but we did not know It at that time. II. M.
