NEW KINO OF BREAD.
Mad of the Entire Grain After N
Ha Been Malted.
An entirely new kind of bread, made
either of wheat or rye, la becoming
popular In Germany aud la likely soon
to be Introduced Into this country. It
la made of the whole sratu. but not
according to auy method hitherto fa
miliar.
The grain la germluated by alternate
steeping in warm water aud aeration,
thla being accomiillslicd by a almpl
mechanical apparatus. Aa aoon aa
rootlets appear It la ready for om and
la crushed to Oneness between roller,
after which It Is dropped through a
chute into aa Iron trough on tha floor
below, where tt la kneaded by ma-
Vhlne.
The preliminary process la one oc
maltlUR similar to the malting of bar
ley. All the water used la the sprout
ing process, which coutalna a large
part of the mineral gaits of the grain,
la poured Into the Iron trough to make
the dough. Thus nothing Is lost, the
entire substance of the grain being In
cluded In the dough, which, with the
addition of yeast and salt, is Anally
formed Into loaves and baked in the
ordinary fashion.
The bread thus made Is" said to hare
a delicious favor. It Is claimed foe tt
that the process of germination makes
the substances of tha grain much more
digestible.
EFFECTS OF TOBACCO.
Long Continued Use of Nlootlne In
jure the Nervous System.
D. Fierce- Clark of New York anyi
that the poisououa effects of tobacco
depend en ulcotlue, pyrldln and a num
ber of other alkaloids which hare not
been thoroughly atudied as yet. To
bacco has a permanent and definite
effect on the nervous system only after
years of uae. Experiments have been
made on producing a tobacco that doea
not contain nicotine, and thla la not
found to be so poteouous, while not as
satisfactory to the smoker. The author
nms np the resulta of experiments on
animals aa to the effects of tobacco
on the nervous system thus:
Tobacco Is primarily a cardiovascu
lar poison; Its acute toxic effects oa
the neuromuscular apparatus are, first.
as an excitant and mild convnlsant;
second, motor nerve depressant, and.
finally, as paralysant of the central
and peripheral nerves of the heart and
lungs. Its chronic toxic effects are to
produce congestion of the brain, spinal
cord and peripheral nerves, inducing
a mild typa of degenerative neuritis.
The toxic coefficient is so variable as
to mate definite conclusions with ref
erence to Its effects on man bard to
reach. Medical Record.
WATER WALKING SHOES.
Foot Boats That Enable the Wearer te
Walk on Watar.
Frederick A. Oldfield of Memphis,
Tena, hast Invented a pair of water
walking shoes with which he hopes to
cross the English channel some time
during the present summer. Each shoe
consists of a beechwood box four feet
In length, eighteen Inches in depth
and one foot In width. In order that
the shoes may skim easily over the
surface five planes are secured to the
bottom of each shoe. The shoes are
fastened to the foot by means of
tor AJiD BOTTOM Of WATCH SHOES,
clamDs such as those used on roller
skates, the foot being inserted through
a bole In tbe top of the shoe, and the
ordinary leather boot being clamped In
place. A covering of rubber around
the opening protects the wearer of the
shoe from the splashing of water. The
hoea weigh five pounds each.
Mr. Oldfield recently completed
trip from Cincinnati to New Orleans
which consumed forty-one days, twen
ty-four more than the time In which
he expected to fulfill the task.
Lighting Requirement of a Room
To find how many electric lamps are
required to light a room the Brush Bui
letln gives the following formula: Mul
tlply the avenge length In feet by the
average width In feet Suppose, for
Instance, that tie result Is 250 square
feet If It be an Important room, say
a drawing route, allow a quarter of
candlepower to each square foot ae
cording to the decorations. About four
lamps of sIxtenQ candlepower each or
eight lamps of eight candlepower each
would suffice .r this room unless
had a very daik shade of paper and
furniture.
8imple Bimedy For Burnt.
A good practice in foundries, where
burns are frequent, is to put oil thick
soapsuds. It beats all the patent com

la obtainable anywhere at any time,
The lather keeps out the air and draws
out the Inflammation. After a few
minutes the burn, If a bad one, may be
wrapped up, but If just an ordinary
burn an occasional application of lath

The Shepherd

It is not ugiteeted that the beginner
In sheep husbandry should vtock bla
farm with pure bred sheep. It will
be necessary to begin with whatever
class of ewes may be found moat
avatlabie, choosing ratua of some pur
breed and adding also a few 'pure
bred ewes of the same breed. The
hills of reuusylvauta contain already
good many ewes largely of Merino
foundation, and these will form an ex
cellent basis for a grade flock when
crossed with desirable typee of rams.
little to the south In West Virginia
there are uinny ewea to be had, and
peculiar type of bill sheep. These
ewea may lie somewhat leggy and bare
of wool, but they mostly prove very
serviceable mothers for early la tubs,
and when united with a good sir the
results will prove quite satisfactory.
In Ohio there are great numbers of
sheep of the Merino type, and these
Ohio sheep will form an admlruble
basis for a grade flock. Next, It la as
tonishing hov good many of the sheep
of the ranges are today, having great
er slae than eastern Merinos, shearing
heavy fleeces and having good, vigor
ous constitutions and no parasite when
they leave the raugo. These range
ewes may often be bought very rea
sonably In Chicago Iu the fall. It re
quires some rare to get the right class.
However, by careful selection after re
ceiving the ewes they may be assorted
so that any that are wrong In any way
may be futtcued and the suitable ones
retained to breed. It la wise In buy
tug these western ewea on the market
to choose the type free from wrinkles
or excessively greasy pelts, and some
times they may be had with an Infu
sion of Cotswold or Shropshire blood.
which makes them all the more val
uable for the farm purpose. The In
experienced shepherd should avoid
lambs or yearlings, and no one should
from choice buy "ewes past four years.
The youug ewes that have never lamb
ed are certain to give more or lees
trouble at their first lambing. Penn

Feeding Lambs Higher In Price.
Reports from the ranges Indicate that
feeding lambs are being contracted for
Octobor delivery at $3 to $5.50 per
hundred pounds. A few contracts have
been made around S3 per head, bat
this Included cows as well as lambs.
These prices ase said to be 25 cents to
SO cents higher than a year ago. Buy
ers are not buying as liberally as
year ago, and the Indications are that
there will be a larger business on the
open market In Denver than last year,
many feeders preferring to take their
chances on the market while condl
tions are as at present The outlook
Is for cheap hay, with a big crop of
grain and probably a large corn crop.
Under these conditions feeders are
more Inclined to take chances, but
prices are so high that many feeders
have already commenced plans to feed
cattle. Eecord-Stockman.
Feed For Late Bummer Pigs.
In answer to the question "What to
the best ration for late summer pigs
(July and August) through the winter
when Intending to have them ready
for the market about the 1st of April
or May? William Dietrich of Illinois
says In the Breeder's Gazette, Chicago
The best ration for late summer pigs
as well as pigs of any other season
that which furnishes the projier amount
Of protein, carbohydrates and bulk,
pig has only one stomach, and this
comparatively small one, therefore it
Is not adapted to roughages and must
be fed largely on cencentrated feeds,
However, If a pig under five or six
months of age is given a full ration of
concentrated feeds It will Invariably
eat too much. Therefore the ration for
pigs of this age should either be lim
ited or else Hhoiild contain a sufficient
quantity of a roughage like clover, al
falfa or wheat bran, so .that the di
gestible nutrients will be limited to
the proper amount. Carbohydrates
may be obtained from corn. Protein
may be obtained from such feeds as
skim milk, soy beans, cowpeas, clover,
alfalfa, and if one chooses to patronize
commercial feed dealers he may use
tankage, otlmenl, wheat middlings and
to a slight extent wheat bran.
