Safest and Best Way.
It will be well for republicans to
study carefully and well, the pe
culiar situation confronting them
in the selection of a candidate for
United States senator at the April
primary. The candidacy of Gov
ernor Chamberlain on the Cake
platform, adds new complications
to the situation. If the three were
to race for the June election it
would certainly add material
strength to Mr. Fulton, as both
Mr. Cake and Mr. Chamberlain
are committed to Statement No. 1,
or the selection of a senator by di
rect vote of the people, while Mr.
Fulton is on record as opposing it.
But at the April primary, either
Mr. Fulton or Mr. Cake must step
aside. We have studied the situ
ation carefully and draw the fol
lowing conclusions:
1st. Should Mr. Cake receive
the republican nomination, it will
place Mr. Chamberlain "between
the devil and the deep sea" with
out a platform to stand on, he hav
ing voluntarily assumed a non
partisan, bappy-go-luckey gait, go
ing the whole hog on Statement
No. 1, and telling his democratic
brethren he recently loved so well
that he has become infatuated
"with most of the Roosevelt poli
cies" until after the June election
after which time the probation
ary state will come and be again
permitted to exercise his conscience
by voting for democratic measures
in the senate, if elected.
2nd. That as Mr. Cake has
firmly stood for, and manfully de
fended Statement No. 1 for the
past two years, there would be no
just cause for republicans to pre
fer a new convert from the demo
cratic ranks on this question to the
exclusion of all other questions of
vital importance to the state and
nation which will come up during
the senatorial term.
3rd. That in the light of past
history, with legislative holdups,
corrupt use of money to "influ
ence" senators and representatives,
men seeking election to the legis
lature on senatorial years to see
the fun; special trains running,
with all other corrupting influences
in connection therewith, thus
bringing shame and disgrace on
the fair name of our state, our peo
ple will never again return to the
old system of election by the legis
lature. 4th. That a very large majority
of the newspapers in the state are
first, last and all the time in tavor
of the people electing a senator.
5th. That nearly every Grange
in the state has declared by reso
lution, that they will not support
candidates for the legislature who
are opposed to election by the peo
ple. 6th. That it is a republican
measure passed by a republican
legislature.
7lh. Nearly every candidate that
has announced himself for the legis
ber D.

lature has subscribed to Statement
No. 1, at least in modified form
and those who failed had to come
back and take their medicine.
8th. With 30,000 republican
majority behind Mr. Cake, would
it be possible for Mr. Chamberlain
to jump sideways into the United
States senate by using a little soft
soap on weak-kneed republicans?
We think not.
9th. Should Mr. Fulton be
nominated, the condition would be
entirely reversed, thus placing
Fulton on the defensive instead of
Chamberlain which would at least
greatly reduce the republican ma
jority.
in view ot these tacts as we see
them, we must . say that to our
minds, the safest, surest and best
thing for republicans to do is to
vote for Mr. Cake for United States
senator. Corvallis Gazette.
Editor Takes Long Walk
Among I lie passengers wno ar
rived on the steamship Senator,
80 hours out from San Francisco,
was John A. Seabury, late of the
San Francisco Call, who has just
bought a small weekly newspaper
in Crook county, the Laidlaw
Chronicle.
Laidlaw is a new stockraising
town on the eastern slope of the
mountains, 36 miles southwest of
Prineville, the county seat, and
266 miles from Portland by the
nearest route. It is also 90 miles
l.om tne nearest railroad station,
Shaniko.
An ardent pedestrian of the
Weston type, Seabury has hit up
on a unique plan to draw attention
and new subscribers to his little
journal, until now published by
W. P. Myers, a lawyer of the lava
bed district. Weather permitting,
seabury will leave Portland in an
attempt to travel the 226 miles to
Laidlaw afoot in ten days. He is
due at Ihe Dalles the night of
