ORCHARDISTS TO SPRAY OR CUT "!?pray 'em or cut 'em down," pays Secretary Williamson, of the state board of horticulture, ac cording to the Telegram, in dis cussing the care of fruit trees and vines. He is now engaged in fend ing out the formulas for spraying for San Jo?e scale, wooly aphis, codlin moth and other things that prey on the fruit crop of Oregon. "Now is the time for winter spraying and it should be done right away," he said. "Where the trees are not worth spraying, they should be cut down and burned, so as not to remain breeding places lor the various peste. is.ven rose bushes should be sprayed, in order that they may not harbor the San Jose scale." His circular says, in regard to lime and sulphur spraying: This is the spray to use in win ter for killing San Jose scale, and all other insects which are on fruit trees in winter. For destroy ing San Jose scale on fruit and other tree and shrubbery, use at any time during the winter at full strength of the formula given be low: for pre veu ting apple three anthracnose, (dead spot or canker) spray with full strength of for: inula about the first of November. For preventing peach leaf curl apply just before buds open in spring. Formula: 15 pounds of un slaked lime, 15 pounds of flowers of sulphur, 50 gallons of water. Plvce part of the water in the vat or kettle, and start the fire, and when the water comes to a boil add the lime and sulphur Boning should be continuous for at least an hour and until the sul - phur has been dissolved. The liquid will then be red. It must be stirred while the boiling is going on. Commercial preparations of the lime sulphur spray are on the mar ket in liquid form and are exten wveiy used, those which are properly made are efficient. Pur chasers of the liquid forms of this spray should require a guaranty from the manufacturers that when such sprays are diluted according to manufacturer's directions they will contain at least 15 pounds of sulphur in solution in each 50 gallons of spray. Neglected Colds Threaten Life (From the Chicago Tribune.) " 'Dou't trifle with a cold', is good advice for prudent men and women It may be vital in the cae. of a child Proper food, good ventilation, and ury, warm ciotnmg are the proper safeguards against colds If they are maintained through the change able weather of autumn, winter and spring, the chances of a surprise from ordinary colds will Ik? slight. But the ordinary light cold will be come severe if neglected, and a well established ripe cold is to the germs of diphtheria what honey is to the bee. The greatest meuauce to child life at this season of the year Ih the neglected cold." Whether It is a child or adult, the cold slight or severe, the very best treatment that can be adopted is to give Chamber lain's Cough Kemedy. It is safe and sure. The great popularity and Immense sale of this preparation has been attained by its remarkable cures of this ailment. A cold never results in pneumonia when it is given. For sale by D. P. Adamson. One of its most spectacular and brilliant features is to be the mag nificent street page nt. This is a competitive eveut open to all cities and towns of Oregon outside of the Rose Citv. There will be grand prizes, the capital prize being a princely sum in cah with a number oi cosily souvenir cups and other trophies of great value and beauty.
