BODY FOUND AT PINE MOUNTAIN Last week the body of a man was found at Tine Mountain in an advanced stage of decomposition. The dead man is eupjwod to be the same person that attempted to commit an assault on Mrs Charles Reed at the Baldwin ranch in July last. The fellow was hired by Mrs. Reed to help clear land and it was on the very first night that he entered the tent of Mrs. Heed and commenced to choke her. Her scream? arou.ed man named Sholty, who occu pied the fame tent with the as sailant, and the fellow made off into the desert and was heard of no more. The attempted assault was telephoned to the sheriff and thatoflicer took every precaution to apprehend the villain hut noth ing could lie heard of him. It is now thought that the fellow struck out across the desert to go to Silver Lake but lost his way. As he decamped in a hurry he was with out food or water and in his weak ened condition wandered around until exhausted. Sheriff Klkins deputiied John Atkinson and A. C. Lucas to proewn to the place and hold an inquest The follow ing is their report: Bend. December 14, liK)7. Frank Elkins, sheriff of Crook county, Dear Sir I went out to . Pine Mountain with A. C. Lucas and held an inquest ou the body found by Oscar lke,and from the evidence lean find 1 am reasonably sure that it is the same man that com mitted the assault on Mrs. Reed of Bend on July 28, 1907. We got a book that we found on him which J. I. West says he feels sure is the one that was shown him bv the dead man before he com mitted the assault ou Mrs. Reed. There was no evidence to show that the man was murdered. From appearances it is evident that the man died from exposure or from the want of water and food. He had no coat, vest or hat on and had torn his shirt from his breast, but there were some shreds of it left on his back. It looked as if be bad tried to tear on ms clothing and to get rid of every thing he had on. As the snow was about ten inches deep where the body was found it was im possible to secure further evidence. We buried him on the ground as it was impossible to move him. John Atkinson, Justice of Peace. HELD TO THE GRAND JURY Howard Maupin, Clarence Short and Jesse U rater have been brought in from Ashwood by Sheriff Elkins. These young men were implicated with J. W. Cochrin and Ed Ras mussen in the robbery of J. II. Turney's store at Ashwood. They had a preliminary hearing before Justice Luckey and all were bound over to the circuit court in wie sum of $1000 each, with the ex ception of J. W. Cochrin who was discharged from custody. Short and Maupin furnished bail, Rastnussen was confined to jail and young Grater is out on parol, with the understanding that he must go to school.
