    Coot Bay Point of View
The railroad content in Oregon
in one which, tfter all, doc not
diocloee any dit-couraginjx feature.
There may he and probably if, a
temporary retention of hostilities
between the Southern Pacific and
the Hill interests, but there is, be
yond question, a very active battle
going on between the Southern
Pacific and the Northwestern.
The stake is central Oregon. The
ultimate result is the occupation
of southwestern 0egon by both
roads and it may be one tr two
others. The road from Vale to
Natron is apparently the active
concern of the Southern Pacific
while the Northwestern is extend
ins it survey westward, and
8ee ms to be making a dank move
ment which mar disturb the
Southern Pacific much more than
the North Bank road ever did, for
should the Northwestern penetrate
to central Oregon and Lake county
and reach the coast in southwest
em Oregon, she would be equi
distant irom San Francisco
the Puget Sound districts,
and
and
have a command of both.
But the Vale-Natron road
18
plainly designed to make the
Drain-Coos Bay line of greater im
portance than was at first sus
pected by the people of Oregon.
It is to be a transcontinental line
which will enable one to take a
sleeper at Coos bay and land in
Denver in due time without pass
ing through Portland, and without
change. It opens up a new coun
try and makes Coos bay a trans
continental terminal whenever the
management decides its interests
demand it. The Coos bay people
have no special reason to worry
over the Southern Pacific company.
It will come to Coos Bay in good
time, provided Coos Bay people
insist upon it, but the way to in
sist upon it is to offer inducements
to the Northwestern people to
come. Marshfield Times.
Fall Sheep Inspection
About September 1, according
to Dr. McClure, the inspectors will
commence upon a general rein-
epection of the bands of the state.
Should scab be found among sheep
pastured upon forest reserves the
owners will be required to dip
twice, immediatelv. Should scab
be found among sheep not on re
serves, the fact will be reported to
the gtate sheep inspector's office,
which will handle the matter.
Since the sheep weie dipped in
accordance with" the state law the
federal men have not been requir
ing that all sheep for shipment be
dipped. Instead, the bands are
merely inspected and if found to
be unaffected and not recently ex-
posed are allowed to go. This
course according to Dr. McClure,
will dow be followed regularly,
and in consequence the sheep
market will benefit to that extent
Previous to the annual dipping all
sheep intended for shipment out
side the state had to be dipped be
fore they could be loaded, whether
actually affected with the scab or
not.
That the general dipping cru
sade on this spring in conforming
with the state law will practically
rid the state of the scab is believed
by Dr. McClure. In his judge
ment there will be but little scab
left after this fall, and next spring
only isolated dipping will be
necessary. Under the sheep law
it is possible for the sheep com
mission to suspend the annual dip
ping provision should the condi
tions justify.
