V A MISLEADING
CIRCULAR
He's a niftier, that man from
Bend. If we had a promoter like
him in Prineville we would he a
town of 5000 inhabitants inoide tf
a year.

Wouldn't that jar you? Two
new counties out of old Crook. If
you don't watch out there will
not be a knob left big enough to
hang your hat on.
The legislature of the State of
Oregon ie now in tecwion. E. W.
Haines of Washington, was elected
president of the senate and Frank
Davey speaker of the house.
J. M. Lawrence, receiver of the
United State land office at Rose
burg, is lobbying at Salem for the
new county, instead of attending
to his duties at his place of busi
ness. Wonder what Uncle Sam
pays him for?
When Mr. Drake geta back from
Salem it would be well tor him to
settle definitely his eastern bound
ary. If he wants the line to run
to the old led of Crooked river
then Perry Poindexter, Mr. John
son and others livinn in Western
Prineville will have to go to Bond
to transact county business. Get
busy, you people.
Crook county's apportionment of
the United States 5 er cent road
fund was 1 1S89.90. This amount
was based upon a total of 5,122,560
acres for the county. There are
ust two counties in the state with
larger acreage Harnev with 6,
780,160, and Malheur w"ith 6,277.-
440.
Additional Local.
J. B. Brown of Havstack, was in
town Tuesday.
Drake and his stool-pigcona at
Bend are sending out the follow,
ing circular with the avowed in
lent ion of misleading the people of
Western Crook. The new court
house will not cost the county
when completed 175,000. The
contract price to the taxpayers
$42,191. Another lie it the state
went made that not a penny was
spent upon the roads of Western
Crook. Everybody knows that
every cent raised in a road district
is spent in that district. The evi
dent purpose of the circular is so
patent that instead of making
friends for Drake and the Bend
lownsite it will react in favor of
letting well enough alone. Our
county taxes are only 15 mills,
and that too, when nearly a double
assessment must be raised to meet
a deficit in the state revenue.
Don't he hoodwinked by Drake
and hit ealelites. Think for your
self and it will not take you long
to turn down his little game. The
circular reads:
CITIZENS
On Saturday hist the county
court signed a contract for the
construction of tho foundation of
a 150,000 courthouse, '-tho build
ins; to be completed when funds
are available " With furnish-
infs and incidentals it will cost
the county $ 75.0(H) before it
tinished Tis building is to be
erected desnito the fact that
bg majority of the taxpayers of
the county have, in writing pro
tested against such action.
representative of these p rotes

objected to this high handed pro
eeeding, he was in effect in

Quite a number of frost bites

Among the worst were the cases of
Gilbert Lawson from the Upper
Ochoco and that of Will Slaven.
Lawson's ears are in bad shape
and Slaven had his hands frozen.
A couple of men who left for
Shaniko by private conveyance
had quite a time of it at the head
of Cow canyon. Early Monday
morning tbev ran into a blizzard
and lost the road. Bv the aid of a

destination.
W. W. Brown, the sheep king of
Eastern Oregon, was in town last
week en route to bis home at Pau
lina, from a business trip to Port
land. Mr. Brown in talking over
stock conditions in general said
that he considered cattle about the
best investment of any at the pres
ent market prices of stock.
Mrs. Julia T. Lindborg died this
morning from a lingering attack of
consumption. She came to this
country in search of health but
failed to get relief. Mr. Lindborg
arrived from Portland yesterday
and was at the bedside of bis wife
when she died. Mrs. Lindborg
was 41 years of age. She has
two sons, one attending the Crook
County High School and the other
a lad of 6 years. Her remains will
be taken to Portland for burial.

amount raised by the county for
all purposes m 1901 was $ 17,178

raised for roads alone was $17,

amount, greater than the total
