THE OWL CASH STORE
R. B. ADAMS, Proprietor
The ispera of western Crook
count sre making a grt uproar
about a direct mail aeryice to
Shaniko. This time it nofce and
absurd statement count tor any
thing they do not propose to be
turned down. They seem to for
get, however, that the department
at Washington will demand some
thing more substantial than hot
air. We have a postal inspector
in this district whose duty it ia to
keep in close touch with the neds
of his department and it is safe to
eay he knows more about the
roads and the time that ia made
than the aforesaid papers. And
there is not a question of a doubt
but that the west side will get all
she ia entitled to when the proper
time arrives. That time is not
just yet. We do not wish it under
stood that this paper has any in
tention of placing any obstacles in
the way of progress in that part of
Crook county so long an honest
methods are used to bring it about
but we cannot allow certain state
ments made by these papers to go
unchallenged.
Great stress is laid upon the in
crease of population in western
Crook. Let us see just how much
Bend has crown since 1904. In
that year Bend cast in the city
election 165 votes In 1906 Bend
enst 91 votes. This is increasing
with a vengeance.
Again, the Bend Bulletin great
lv overestimates the amount of
mail matter carried on the Prine
ville route. It placed the amount
at from a ton and a half to two
tons. The postmaster at Prine
ville says that a ton a day on an
average would be a liberal esti
mate.
As to the matter ot time and
roads one would be led to believe
in reading the Bulletin tnal ail
delays would be eliminated if only
the Bend route were chosen
When the inspector was at Prine
ville not long ago it was figured
that a half hour might be saved
possibly by making the change.
Now, as to the money order busi
ness, i be Bulletin was very care
ful not to give any figure when it
made the statement that . more
business was done at Madras than
at Prineville. Inquiry at the post
office here elicited the information
that more business is done at
Prineville than in both Bend and
Madras put together. Give us the
facta gentlemen, upon which your
claims are based. The people are
tired of hot air.

A. S. Ireland, supervisor ot the
western division of the Blue Moun
tain Forest Reserv. and Henry
Ireland, deputy supervisor, return
ed last week from the stockmen's
convention held at Canyon City.
The gentlemen speak in the high
est terms of their treatment in
Grant county and of the amicable
feeling manifested by both sheep
and cattlemen. The meeting, says
Mr. Ireland, was a great success in
every way. A much better under
standing now exists between these
two great interests of Central Ore
Ron.
The western division of the re
serve was subdivided into ten dis
tricts and committees of sheepmen
and cattlemen were appointed in
each to adjust the lines of the
range between them. The govern
ment officials made it very plain
to thee committees that they must
come to an agreement between
themselves if they could, but if
they could not Uncle Sam would
take up the matter and adjust the
lines to suit himself. It was ex
plained to them that as they were
better acquainted with their own
needs than the government they
were therefore in a better position
to do justice to all concerned
was in this spirit that the severa
committees set about the work of
adjustment and the result of thei
labors was satisfactory all around
If there should crop out any dis
satisfaction at sny time the matter
is to be left with A. S. Ireland, for
est supervisor, and his decision
must be accepted as final by all
concerned.
Mr. Ireland says that about 400
stockmen were present and ap
plied for permits, and that 200
growers were represented by prox
ies. Sheep to the number of 304,
543 were allowed on this reserve
in 1906; 23,186 head of cattle and
1534 horses. For the season of
1907 the limit for sheep is placed
at 240,000. The forest supervisor
wishes to announce through the
columns of the Journal that all
persons who have not filed their
application for grazing permits for
next season should do so as soon
ax possible.
Before the meeting adjourned
resolutions were passed endorsing
the forest reserve policy of the
government and expressing con
fidence in the fairness and ability
with which the difficult questions
had been settled.
