PRINEVILLE, . OREGON
Reserve Allotmenti Satisfactory.
Fur almost two week past the
Dieting of stockmen of the eastern
division of the Hlue Mountain For
cut Reserve ha held the Uiarda in
Sutupter. Although the meeting
was ncheduled for iu commence
ment on November K, many stock
men reached here earlier, and
work was started immediately up
on their arrival.
Committee had heen appointed
representing sheep and cattle men
(or the purpose of arranging a set
tlement among themselves aa to
what territory would he applied
for from the reserve tor gracing.
Those who exected that the range
warfare heretofore existing would
be brought into thin meeting were
disappointed, an nothing occurred
during the whole convention to
mar the proceeding, which have
proven satisfactory to almoel all
concerned.
It la considered that thia meet
ing haa done more to settle the
bitter feuda that have disgraced
Urunt and Western liaker than all
the legislative enactments of pant
year. Stockmen left here with
clear understanding as to their
right, and there is Mnall prospect
that the killing of sheep and cat
lie will continue among thoie who
will occupy the ranges of the forest
reserve.
The convention really had the
appearance of a legislative assem
bly when over 200 interested men
congreguted daily and nightly in
the Hotel Sumpter to discuss the
Summer range problem on the re
serve. U. IS. Shelter and his corps
oi assistants worked indefutigably
to make allotments that would
meet with the indorsement of the
stockmen. That they were suc
cessful in this respect is shown
when it can be suid scarcely a man
went away feeling that he had
been unjustly treated.
Oregon, Washington and Idaho
were well represented in the
gathering. Most of those coming
from the two last named states
came from Walla Walla and Boise.
Men whoso property valuations
represented suoib ranging from
$10,000 to almost $1,000,000 were
present, some of them being the
greatest representatives of wealth
of the Northwest.
Toward the close of the con
vention Mr. Sheller was assisted
by Chief of the Forest Reserve A.
F. Totter, of Washington, D. C.
lie and Mr. Sheller left for the
John Day section, where they will
inspect the condition of that part
of the reserve. -
