OUR FAIRS.
What r you doing about ex
hibits for the coming fairs? The
dates are not far off and you have
little time in which to make
preparations. If you are out after
lyre stock premiums your fancy
stock should be in prime condition
now. If it is not in good condition
it ia not too late to get it in pre
sentable shape. Fairs are very
important institutions to the farm
er and stockman and the success
they attain is largely due to their
efforts. We have the Redmond
fair September 20, 21 and 22, fol
lowed by the Crook county fair the
second week in October and we
want every farmer and stockman
in Crook county to feel a personal
responsibility in the success of
both these institutions. Pick out
rour finest stock and save the best
you have in field and garden and
try for a blue ribbon. This means
tou. Let everybody take hold.
The Oregon State Woolgrowers
Association will hold its annual
meeting in Condon in September.
This is an important gathering of
woolmen and legislative matters of
vital interest to the wool industry
will be taken up.
Try the Journal's classified ad
column for quick results. This
method of advertising does not
cost much in comparison with the
results achieved. If you want any
thing, or if you have anything for
sale or to trade try a classified ad.
Wat the Man Murdered?
The skeleton of a man was found
the other day on the ranch of P,
Chitwood who lives on Willow
creek, near Grizzly. The remains
were buried at the side ol the creek
near an old corral and were covered
by heavy rocks. The waters of the
creek washed the sand away and
some children belonging to Mr,
Chitwood found the bones. The
skull only was lacking. A search
is being made to find it, for with
out it it cannot be determined
whether the remains were those of
an Indian or a white man.
The people of the community
are at a loss to account for the
ghastly find. Some seventeen
years ago a sheep insjector sud
denly disappeared in this neighbor
hood and nothing more was ever
heard of him. Whether he was
knocked in the head and buried at
this place is causing much specu
lation among the old-timers
Then, again, some' contend that
years ago an old emigrant trail
passed through that section and
that the man might have died on
the trail and have been buried
there. Whether the remains were
those of a murdered man or not
will probably never be cleared up,
Well Drilling Machine.
Culver, Oregon, August 24
Editor Journal Sir: thinking
a few items from the drilling ma
chine might interest your readers
made a brief visit to it and found
it a fine drilling outfit ia charge of
Mr. Loveland with Frank Mc
Dowell as assistant. The machine
itself weighs 15,000 pounds.- The
engine is 12-borse power with a 14
horse power boiler. It burns wood
mixed with Hay Creek coal whic
makes a very satisfactory fue
The drill proper with riggin
weighs 1500 pounds and is run by
a cable lj inches in diameter
The ultimate capacity of the ma
chinery is 1200 feet and the whole
will be used unless sufficient water
is found at a less depth. The last
45 feet of rock drilled is in red
granite and the whole number of
feet drilled is 247. An examina
tion of the drillings under a micro
scope would be very interesting
for anyone who likes the study of
geology. Messrs. I3arnett and
Loveland deserve special commen
dation for bringing a machine of
this character into the county.

Cost of Miller's Murder Trial
From an itemizd statement on
file in the county clerk's office we
find that the murder trial of
George S. Miller in Crook county
last May cost Harney County
I24i614. This amount is a very
small item compared to what
the case has cost Harney.
brief history of the case is as fol
lows: George S. Miller, James
Uolweii ana JJurt Bailey were
jointly indicted for the killing of
Warren Curtis in Harney county
March 22, 1902. The killing was
the result of an alleged altercation
over the ownership of some horses
Miller did the shooting while Col
well and Bailey were several hun
dred yards distant holding some
horses.
Miller was convicted of murder
in the second degree and was serv
ing a long sentence in the Salem
penitentiary when on appeal to
the supreme court the case was re
versed and upon a retrial in Crook
county he was acquitted.
Colwell was convicted of man
slaughter in Harney county for
his connection with the crime but
upon appeal was given a retrial
with a change of venue and the
case was heard in Malheur county.
The Malheur jury convicted him
of manslaughter and he is now
serving a six vears' sentence in the
penitentiary. Now efforts are be
ing made to have Colwell pardon
ed. The point is made that at
most Colwell could only have
been an acessory to the crime and
so long as the principal was ac
quitted there is no justice in the
infliction of punishment on Col
well. The case against Bailey was dis
missed. $5 Reward.
The above reward will be paid for infor
mation leading to the recovery of a sor
rel horse, 10 vears old, branded "7fi" on
left stifle and "J 0" on left shoulder;
strayed away two months ago from my
premises. Was last heard of on Up
per Ochoco. Was raised on Beaver
creek. J. H. Dklobe, Prineville, Or.
