'Trade at Home" is a good mot
to put over the door of every house
in Prineviile. This ie the only
way you can ever hope to bu.ld up
a town. Too many of our people
are prone to pour over the catalogs
of mail order houses and pick out
stuff that they would refuse to take
from the home merchant. They
buy "unsight and unseen" as the
saying goes and in ninety-nine
cases out of a hundred are disgust
ed with their purchase when it ar
rives. Why people do this is one
of the mysteries of human nature.
Tbey get bit so often that in time
you would suppose they would
learn better. There should be
more of the spirit of reciprocity be
tween our merchants and their
patrons. If you want credit you
expect to get it at home but when
you have cash you send it out of
town to help build up institutions
that have no direct interests in
your own community.
Labor Day.
Governor Chamberlain has is
sued a proclamation setting aside
Monday, September 3, as Labor
Day. The text of the proclama
tion follows:
"Whereas, the first Monday in
September of each year has been
set apart and declared to be a pub
lic holiday under the designation
of Labor Day;
"Now, therefore, I, George E.
Chamberlain, as governor of the
state of Oregon, pursuant to the
statute in such case made and pro
vided, do hereby declare Monday,
the 3d day of September, A. D.,
1906, a legal holiday, to be known
as Labor Day.
"The people of the state are to
be congratulated upon the friendly
relations which have always exist
ed between the employer and the
employed within its jurisdiction.
To this condition is largely due
the prosperity that surrounds us
on every side.
"It is to be hoped that the day
hereby set apart for observance as
a public holiday will be generally
observed by all classes of our citi
zens, and that the workshops and
the store and all places of business
will be closed, so that the employ
er as well as the employed may
completely rest from all labor."

some time since I noticed any
items from Maury I thought I
would try to write some.
Aleck Cummins is becomimg an
expert with the shotgun. He has
clipped the heads off about a hun
dred sagehens this season.
Tullie Hobwood of the sawmill
is just recovering from an attack
of sickness which he contracted
some ten days ago while at Pau
lina. James Gilchrist and Jack Mor
ris came up from the river Sun
day. They informed us that not
withstanding the great shortage of
hired help the harvest season
would be brought to a close some
time in 1906. These happy re
sults are being brought about
through the scientific management
of the co-operative system prac
ticed by the farmers in this vi
cinity. Elmer Clark of Paulina, paid a
visit to the sawmill Friday. Mr.
Clark informs us that Paulina is
getting to be a lively place on Sun
day. You can see anything from
a fight to a horse race.
Harry Hinton and Frank
Smead, a couple of youthful hunt
ers, hearing of a large black bear
that was making its headquarters
on the top of Mule Deer mountain,
a knob on the north side of Maury
mountain, started out the other
morning to bring bruin back with
them. The boys had scarcely sur
mounted the summit of Mule Deer
when they located the bear lying
in the shade of a clump of small
trees about a hundred yards dis-

tant. "This is luck," said Harry.
"We have him just where we want
him. There is nothing between
us so lets give him the best we
have." Conveying the idea that
the bear was just the same as their
meat. They both took deliberate
aim and let go. This had no ef
fect They tried it again with the
same result, much to the amuse
ment of the hear. This was dis
couraging, aud the boys were be
ginning to loose heart when Harry
sent in one that evidently found a
weak spot in bruin's coat, for he
went rolling down the hill. The
boys shouted for joy for they were
sure that they had him, but to
their great surprise and disappoint
ment the bear picket! himself up,
turned and looked at them with a
great big smile, walked into the
brush and was seen no more. The
boys fired twenty-one times and
are confident that bruin has that
many leaden marks on his tough
hide. From what we saw at our
position at the glass we think the
bovs did well to get awav, and
that without a scratch, too.

Buried by the County.
A most pathetic sight to look
upon is the effects of a mis-spent
life. Crook county for nine years
has extended aid In an unfortu
nate named Munsun. Various
persons have been hired to look
after his needs, particularly that
of food. Munsun has been able to
attend to the duties connected
with his cabin until recently,
when it seems his strength entirely
failed him and he lacked the com
mon attentions necessary to one
confined in bed. The woman hir
ed by the county to board him was
not paid enough to justify her in
staying home to perform the work
of a nurse, hence the wretched
man was allowed to wallow in his
cabin until the attention of the
city authorities was called to his
condition. When Marshal Crooks
made an inspection of the prem
ises Munsun was found lying on
the floor of his cabin stark naked
while the man's bed and bedding
were in a filthy condition. The
place has been made as comfort
able as the means at hand would
allow and William Barnes has
been employed to look after him.
Munson is mentally and physi
cally very week and it is thought
he cannot long survive. When
roused out of h9 stupor be begs for
something to end his miserable ex
istence. It was evident from blood
marks on the floor which he tried
to mop up that Munsun had tried
to commit suicine Dy cutting a
vein in his arm. The incision he
made has not healed yet.
Note. Since the avove article
was written it was learned that
Munsun died Tuesday morning.
He was buried by the county the
same evening.
Crook County Should be Repre
sented.
T. M. Baldwin, president of the
Citizens' Business League, has re
ceived a letter from the secretary
treasurer of the Oregon Develop
ment League calling attention to
the fact that the National Irriga
tion Congress is to be held in
Boise, Idaho, from September 3 to
8. It is desired to make the Ore
gon delegation the very largest in
attendance upon the convention.
California is to be especially
well represented, and the Cali
fornia party will spend a day in
Portland en route to Boise. The
California-Oregon special will
leave Portland at 8:15 Saturday
evening, September 1. Both Gov.
Chamberlain and Gov. Pardee will
accompany the special and it is ex
pected that our senators and con
gressmen will also be in attendance.
Vice-president Fairbanks and a
majority of the western senators
and congressmen will arrive at
Boise Monday.
Crook county should be repre
sented at this congresB by as many
persons as can find it convenient
to get away. A one-fare rate for
the round trip hs Keen made by
the railroads. All those who
would like to attend should make
the-fart known to Mr. Haldwin at
once.
