Republican Candidate for United States Senator
CHAMPION OF STATEMENT ONE
.louatiiau I'ourne, . I r., candidate before the Kepubllcau primaries for tlie
nomination of 1'nlted Slates Senator in congress, for the long term, com
mencing March 4, l!HlT, was born in Xew liedford, Mass.. February i'i, 1.S55,
was a niember of t he class of 1.H77 at Harvard I'ni versity: came to Cortland
May Hi, 1n"S; was a Republican member of) the Oregon I'gislature in tlie
session of lSNTi, and the extra session of lHMi; was one of Oregon's delegates
to tin Republican National Convention of I.Sns, and Oregon's member of
the Republican .National Committee from INNS to lN!rJ, and a delegate to
the Republican National Convention of ISW, and was elected as a Mitchell
Republican to the Oregon legislature in 1MM!.
Mr. Hourne lias bvn more prominently identified with the development
of the mineral resources of Oregon than any other man in the state, having
expended in the last 20 years over 1,000,000 of his own money in the ncipil
sttiou and development of Oregon mines.
While Mr. Ronnie has had his residence and main otlice In 1'ortland since
IH"H, lie has lut 1 1 another ollice at Xew liedford, Mass., ami lias carried ou
the business of ids father's estate since lHS'l, which makes him familiar with

making an able and inllueni in) senator for tlie state of Oregon.
Mr. Ronnie lias always favored extending the dirtvt power of the people
over their government a.s far as possible.- He was one of the leading spirits
in the Dilative tuul Referendum movement from 1N!M! until It was approved

the same position wit li the People's Power League at this time. In all
these movements he has been one of the few to guarantee the necessary
expenses of preparing and proposing their measures to the people.
He says that t he choice of 1'nlted States Senator should be by direct vote
of the people, a'nil that the legislature should be compelled to elect the man
the people select. To accomplish this result, lie is championing statement
