It is hoped that Horace dear will not be wiggled out of all of the money he bamboozled from his eastern lambs. The Oregonian of last Monday contain a half tone of Sheriff Smith's ranch 13 miles alwve town on the Ochoco. Aside from the title of the picture "Typical Ranch Scene of Oregon," there is no other comment made or a more definite location given. Space in the Oregon ian, of course, is valu able. That much is appreciated, but the mere hint that the ranch was located some place in Eastern Oregon might have answered the purpose better. New comers into the state might have to look over a good deal of territory before they could locate the ranch from the Oregonian's description. The fact that so fine a ranch jroerty is located in Crook county close to Prineville puts the kibosh on further comment by the Oregonian. Xaturlich. Even the blooming deserts and blossoming pastures eel the basement torn out of their Sunday panU. "And there ve air," as the St. John's man savs. August Heinze has finally set tled his battle with the Amalga mated .Copper company, which has heen in the courts for years past, by selling out to the Standayl Oil eople who are in reality the Amalgamated trust. Thomas W. Lawson, in his story of "Frenzied Finance," a few months ago gave the public a vivid word picture of this young man, who, starting without a cent, took advantage ot the apex law and accumulated millions through his fight against Rokefeller, Rogers and the other votaries of Standard Oil. Lawson said Heinze was the first man in history who had ever succeeded in holding out against Coal Oil Jonnny ana nis partners ana pic tured Hein.e in anything but a kindly light. His downfall and capitulation evidently has now taken place, but if the news dis paicnes are to oe relied upon Heinze with all his business dis honesty has left a copper taste in the mouth of Standard Oil which will take several severe fleecings of the American public to wear away. Desert Tract May Be Opened. An autnonative report comes from Silver Lake, that the 1 townships of desert land in the region of Summer Lake, which the government withdrew for irriga tion purposes a year ago, are to be thrown open to settlement. If such action is taken the district will enjoy the largest settlement this year of any in the state. Prior to the government with drawal and since that time settle ment of the surrounding district new there during the past year. Rr-j cent settlement has leen made in i the section outside of the with- drawal, the land at present being filed uyon lying in a continuous body and extending 40 miles north and south and 15 miles in width. The entire district owing to the closeness of the water to the sur face, although semi-arid in charac ter, is capable of producing heavy crops and the government's final action in restoring the land to settlement will be awaited eagerly bv (hose who are anxious to secure a tract of land of which there is none letter east of the Cascades.
