Prineville, Oregon THURSDAY, JANUARY 11. 190S Remarkable Growth at Lamonta. A trip through tht- Lamonta dis trict shows ahtoninhinp develop-1 nient and progress there during the past twelve months. New homes are springing up on every hand, sage brush is being replaced with stubble fields and large tract that have in years past been thought to be worthless have proven to be some of the best agri cultural lands in Crook county. No irrigation is necessary in this section and an abundance of good well water is available at a depth from 20 to 40 feet. A new town site has been laid off and many lots have already been sold. J. C. Rush has a large general mer chandise store here and is post master. He is doing a thriving business and is proprietor of the townsite and is altogether the 'leadtng citizen." Last Septem ber M. T. Cowan and his son-in-law F. H. Mingers came to La monta from Chisago county Min nesota and bought town property. Mr. Cowan built a good hotel building and feed barn and im mediately entered upon a success ful business. Mr. Mingers erected a substantial blacksmithshop and went to work at his trade. Last November their families joined them. Mr. Rush has also com pleted a neat business building which will soon lie opened up as a first-class drug store. One-half mile from the post ottice and store is the public school building where the rising generation re ceives instruction and where re ligious services are held most every Sunday. During the year tfce Oriizly Ike Sawmill Com pany erected a mill five miles east on the slope of Grizzly mountain and are supplying the neighbor hood with first-class lumber at reasonable prices. Lamonta is located in the center of a fertile agricultural district and in rea sonable course of development can not fail to be a good sized town. The survey of the Oregon Eastern line runs through the townsite, thence ten miles south east to the crossing of Crooked river near Forest. It is a sightly community and with the advent of the iron horse Lamonta will quadruple her productions to swell the business of the railroads and add prosper ity and luster to Central Oregon. Miss Ina Moore was married to Mr. Harry Pitzer at Lamonta, Jan uary 3. 0. (J. C'nllver. .1. 1. offici ating. Fine Ranch from Road Company. Montgomery Krothers recently purchased a section of wagon road land adjoining the' farm of their father, J. M. Montgomery, n Crooked river six miles beiow Prineville at the reported figure $8 per acre. The lines run on to the rim rock in some places but the buyers have secured a large acreage of the finest land in the valley, and now have a crew of Indians engaged in clearing it of sage brush ready for the plow. Nor is th.s the only tract of the river lottom land so long unused for agriculture that is being clean ed up ready for cultivation. : All along the road between Prineville and Forest land holders are doing a great deal of clearing work so that indications are most favor able for an enormous increase in the tillable area of Crook county lands for next years cropping. ciric has asked another mill com pany in western Crook county to submit bids for the manufacture jnnd deliverv of ties at Forest, Red mond and Bend. The latter re qmst came from the San Fran cisco othces of the Southern Pacific, and shows plainly that the sur veys now Wing made by that com pany from ttw north are not idle work. It is not known at this time whether Mr. Cow leu has made anv definite contract for the manufacture of ties for the tireat Southern. Judges and Clerks of Election. Mrs. F. V. McCaffrey and son and Mr. A. Morqun arrived last week from Warsaw, N". Y. A social dance will be given Hotel Redmond next Friday eve ning. Kve-rylxvly invited. Two engineering crew are now busy extending surveys for later als from the Pilot Butte canal. Vi. IVm l Uil h, ul M .nils-, I.. veiling Iht ian-iit. Mi. an.
