It wouldn't have Ihmmi a good
day for a ball game without, a
miniature cyclone and a rainstorm.
However, the Scarlet Tanapers
mm to take to that kind of
weather.
The Business League of this city
has a fine opportunity now to
pether together some facts and tig
uers which will prove of benefit to
the community and county in
goneral if the matter is given prompt
attention. The following letter
from the Portland Chamber of
Commerce to TV Carnal is self-fxplannto;;-:
"For A c i, ' t t your section
pf the fta;-,. :st that you
discuss in yo;.r pa'.-iM and set forth
the resource ftn-.i 1 usiness oppor
tunhie of o i s n fot the in
formation i; vv- ur- to the Expo
sition, wlv !:'.''-' V induced to
visit V'i.;r Kef. ly
"We. would like to know what
industries could be properly locat
ed there such as lumler mills,
woolen mills, dairies, creameries,
etc., etc., in short, every advant
age you can offer to an intending
investor or settler. We want this
information prior to the opening
of the Exposition. It is the in
tention the Portland Crmmler
of Commerce to promote the de
velopments of the entire state,
without prejudice to any locality,
and to make the most of the pres
ent opportunity to advertise our
resources and to follow up this
work actively after the Fair."
The foregoing offers ample op
portunity for the Business League
to 6pend a little treasury money
in gathering together and publish
ing a concise but thorough state
ment concerning the developments,
resources, latent possibilities and
needs of the county, in which
could he set forth to good advant
age the business opening offered to
intending investor. The work
wou'-t consume but little time,
would be inexpensive and its effect
and benefits unlimited. Inasmuch
as Crook county will have no ex
hibit at the Lewis and Clark fair,
there is all the more reason w hy
this economical method of publi
city should be acted ujon in the
shortest possible time.
Minstrels to Be Given Soon.
Arrangements, were made lat
evening by the board of derectors of
the Athletic club for a minRtrel Rhow
which will be given probably for
two night iiiKide of a couple of
weeks. Joe Snielzer was given com
plete charge of erfecting the details
with power to appoint his own
committees and arrange for all the
various features. A call meeting
will be issued for next Saturday
night at which time all those who
will take part will be asked to be pres
ent and work will begin at once on
the show which will Is? as ridiculotiK
as Is posnible to make it. All the
paraphernalia necesxary has lietn
received and it is thought the show
can le staged inside of three weeks.
Athletic Club Elects Officers.
The annual election of officers of
the Prineville Amateur Athletie club
was held Tuesday evening with the
following results; Otto Gray, presi
dent; Herbert Hideout, secretary.
The board of directors is composed
of Prof. A. C. Strange, Fred W.
Wilson and Don Steffa.
The financial report as read show
ed the club to tie gaining ground
rapidly and everything possible will
lie done during the present season to
stimulate new Interest and provide
the means for improvements and
additional avenues of amusement.
The board of directors held a meet
ing Inst evening and announcement
will be made soon of the new lines
of work mapped out.
Club Smoker Announcement.
The Athletic Club will give another

good program will bo arranged and
refreshments will Ik? srved with
several other side stunts to amuse
the guests. The committee having
the matter in hand, and guarantee

Crook County and Irrigation.
I was invited, u few days ago, to
take a pleasant ride, behind n pair
of high stepping horses, to give ray
opinion of n ditch, that is being
brought out of McKay creek, about
six miles north of Prineville, where
Jt is tapjed, and carried across the
county road and dug along a luv(
side hill a dUtar.ce of two miles and
made 111 feet wide on the bottom,
through a concrete formation of
gravel and clay, making a very
strong lower levy. Impervious to the
damaging work of snuirrcls and

The land slopes front this point to
the Lone Pine gap. and also all the
land lying U-t ween the foot hill ditch

embraces as much as a half town-i
ship, or acres of laud with I
st-anvly a stone, to speak of, in t!ieJ

ID feet in depth, an.l made up of a
nans greytsn loam, which covers iiiii,w- ,,. ,i,rtma .,..,
understrata of clay mixel with fine
cut stone and sm;dl gravel, forming
an hnisTvlous under structure
that proves to a demonstration
that the land is particularly adapt
ed to irrigation, and the production
of cereals and grasses, and more es
iwlnlly the universally adopted al
falfa. There is no use to descant on
the siHH'riority of Alfalfa to all other1
earthly products, for the fivding of
cattle, sheep, hog. horses and chick
ens. The source of water supply Is
McKay creek and tributaries, which
Is about 2t mites !u length from its
junction with ("rooked river to the
summit of a spur of the I'lue mount
ains, mostly covered with pine,
spruce and fir timber, with many
creeks, furnishing supplies of water
from many dark gorges and north
hillsides containing deep banks of
olid suow which keep an ever!
flowing supply until reaching the j

where the water is diverted in -many

along the at ream. But millions of
gallons of water have been allowed

carried off without iwneritting any

this ditch will convert into broad
farms for many happy homes, has
lieen worked to raise a little patch
of rye. while the poor settler has
been hauling water for domestic use.
The people of California, Wyoming.
Utah, Arizona, Idaho and Montana
have lieen working this water
question for years nt the expense of
immense outlay of money, which!
is now flowing back and repleting
their coffers with wealth un
told, and now poor old Oregon
(Jod Almightys best handiwork,
with all its wealth of soil, its timlicr,
its mines, its wealth and its grand
eur of scenery, has kept Its favored
children in ease and comfort, until
new blood and eastern industry has
waked them up to a sense of their
comparative condition with other,
and nearer states, and have turned
their thoughts to our water courses
for irrigation, and our silent water
powers to engender electric power
to light us and heat us and start the
mills to whirring to clothe lis.
In conclusion I will say, wit h re
ference to this body of agricultural.
Irrigable land, that every odd sec
tion is owned by the W. V. and C. M.
wagon road company to which they
have perfect title, yet it is my belief
that this land can be bought at a
reasonable valuation. S. J. X.
