T CROOK COUNTY JOURNAL PUBLISHED BY THE JOURNAL PlBLISMlNU CO. I). F. STKFFA. S. M. lt.UI.FY. Published CTfry Thursday at Th Journal HuiUlinn, Prinevill, On-jron. Tern! of Subucrlptlon: One your. month, 73 cent. Single cople5 OFFICIAL PAPER THURSDAY, The favorable action which the county court will take in the mat ter of building the new road through Hay Creek canyon, thus avoiding the long and energy destroying haul over McPherson hill, is commendable to sav the least. The road is one which should have been built a matter of 25 years ago, but even at thi? late day the route will service its purpose, and to greater advantage because of the material increase during the past two years in travel and freight traffic. The estimate placed upon the total cost of con structing the road ranges between 13000 and 13500, and beyond doubt the entire " expenditure would be counterbalanced each year in the saving in time and rates to all parts of the county. Hay Creek canyon offers a natural p;us through which a road can be built on safe ground at a water level and now that the county court has viewed with iu own eyes the proposed route and determined definitely the saving in time, labor and cost such a road would afford, it in to be hoped that little time will be lost in giving the whole county the benefit of the advant ages offered bv the undertaking. The following card, sent out by a Detroit commercial club is worth reading and pasting in your hat. If there is any chance to boom business, boom it. Don't pull a long face and look as though you had a sour stomach. Hold up your head, smile and look for bet ter things. Hide your little ham mer, and try to speak well of -Al uwiers no matter now small you really know yourself to be. When a stranger drops in, jolly him, tell him this is the greatest town on earth, and it is. Don't discourage him by speaking ill of your neigh bors. Lead him to believe that he lias at last struck a place where white jteople live. Don't knock. Help yourself along 1 y becoming popular, and push your friends with you. It's dead easy. Be a good fellow, and soon you will have a procession of followers. No man ever helped himself knocking other people down in character and business. No man ever got rich by trying to make others 1-elieve he was the only man in town who knew anything. You can't climb the ladder of success by treading on other people's conn. Keep off the corns and don't knock. . The Portland Journal has chas ed the rainbow colors in which it is printed down the street, and the "old woman in the tower" will apply some to the faces of her own family, namely, the Evening Telegram. In fact one issue of the latter has already appeared in all the gergeous array capable 'of being administered by a four decker, magazine supplement, Hoe perfecting press, and promise is given of more to come. So far, the prismatic colors of the Telegram are confined to its humorous supplement in Saturday evening's edition, but "colors run" and no doubt they will gradually work themselves around to the frontpages. This, of course, will be a slow procedure, so the public will not gain the idea that the Telegram is aping the progressive style set by The Journal. But the change is coming. The garland ox reu win soon De a prominent feature of the old woman's twilight mouthpiece. The signs of the times all point that way. Even the old woman herself may suc- cuuid later on to the same style to keep from losing ground. The town of Waycross, Georgia claims to have 'solved the liquor problem without resorting to pro hibition or local option. The city council has passed an ordinance fixing the liquor license fee at $30 000 a year, thus making Waycross undoubtedly the highest licensed town in the country. Nineteen years ago the campaign for high license started and the fee was fixed ; Six ! Entered at th Print I vill jxn olVn- at inl cent each. ! class rates. OF CROOK COUNTY. Chicago has just gone through another of its paradoxical perform ances by giving Judge Dunne, the democratic nominee for Mavor, a plurality of over -4,000 votes in the city eWt ion of last Tuesday. If Roosevelt weie to be elected tomorrow, the same city would prodably give him as large a plurality as it has Dunne.
