Samuel Mi-Dill Courtney, well
known nulilent of tin John lny
valley, uml a pioneer nf Istu, dieil at
the home uf his daughter, 'Lizzie
Clark, near this city. Sunday, Febru
ary 5t It, after an illness extending
through several months. The direct
cause uf his death was a hemorrhage
uf the brain, which was probably
superinduced by a paralytic stroke,
which he suffered sometime ago, and
from which lie never fully iveuvered.
Dii-eased was born .lanuary L'Tth,
IM.",, being ten days over sixty years
of age. He was a native of Illinois,
and with his paivntH crossed the
plains in lS4."i, and located near
Brownsville, Linn county, Oregon.
Here he gtvw to manhood, and
in 1MW, married Margan't K. Noble,
the daughter of a well known family
uf that locality. In lss:.' he moved
to eastern Oregon and settltil fn
Crook enmity, where he nslded until
a -short time ago, when he removed
to the Iiee country. During .his
residence In Crook county he was
engaged In the cattle business and
here he was prominent in the affairs
of tlie county and district in which
he lived.

ney, of Cleveland, Washington, one
daughter, Lizzie Clark, nf this valley
survive him.
