A SHEEPMAN IS INDICTED
Albert Canning Will Answer
Charge of Setting Fire in the
Cascade Forest Reserve.
What is the first ind.etment
against the alleged prepetrators of
the disastrous forest fires which
raged in Oregon last year and be
fore, when millions of dollars'
worth of valuable timber went up
in smoke, was made public this
morning, says the Telelegram.
The indictment charged Albert
Canning, a prominent citizen and
sheepman of Prineville, Ore., with
wilfully setting fire, July 21, 1903,
near Davis Lake, section 26, town
ship, 22 range 8, Crook county, to
grass, underbrush and limlier, and
suffering that fire to burn. The
witnesses examined before the
United Stales grand jury which re
turned the indictment were S. C.
Bartrum, John Phelps, Charles
Maloneand Cy J. Bingham.
The place where the fire is said
to have been set is inside the Cas
cade Range forest reserve, and the
act therefore constitutes a direct
violation ol the act of February 24
1S97. as amended by the act of
May 5, 1900
A deputy United States marshal
will be sent to Prineville today to
arrest Canning, who is exjiected to
furnish - bonds for his immediate
release until his arraignment and
trial take place.
for the foundation and first story
was begun immediately, and this
week three kegs of power were used
in r using some of the rock out of
the quarry where it can be handled
to some advantage and dispatch.
A site has been chosen just south
of the Crooked river bridge for
establishing a brick yard where
600,000 bricks will be burned at
the rate of 10,000 a day. Net all
of these will be used in the High
school and a good supply will be
on hand for the construction of
other buildings.
Monday the work of clearing the
land on the site selected for the
building was begun, and the exca
vation for the basement will be
finished in a few days. It is the
intention of Contractor Gray to
rush the work on the building as
rapidly as possible so it will be
ready for occupancy in the fall.
J. B. Shinp will be superintendent
of construction and will in all
probability furnish the wood work
for the interior finishing.

CATTLEMEN STAY AT HOME
Annual Meeting of Stockerowers
Association Has But One At
tendant Saturdav.
Although the recently-born Ore
gon Cattle Growers' Association
represents one of this state's great
industries, its first annual conven
tion, which was to have been held
Saturday, fizzled out because no
one but the secretary attended at
tended it. Grant Mays, of The
Dailes, is the secretary, and he
could give no reason why the cat
tlemen had failed to respond to
the call.. The programme for the
convention was all prepared, the
Auditorium had been engaged, the
preliminaries were complete and .
nothing was lacking but every
body. The association was organized at
the recent congress of the National
Livestock Association, which was
held in Portland. At that time
