It is evident that with in the next few years a good build ing could do erected at small cost to county residents which will serve its purpose fully and remain a credit to the community as the present building does not seem to do. The economy in constructing such , a county building should appeal to every tax payer who has taken any part in the past de velopment of the county. A building can be erected and paid for in six or eight years with the tax rate now in voeue and leave besides a substantial sum , litis Uspeaks province of The Journal to state that (X1 voters on the IVschulcs nii'Uyy tioivins uouulatie.n and an river will not I without power to , unprecedented expansion along mis wlwii' llwrwainT'watThwti-MtmtnstyM lines. If the Secretary has been in and strenuous search, bad at hist good standing with the lumber found a buyer and that other 'companies he certainly has lost hands would take hold of a much favor with them now and all delayed irrigation enterprise. It is others who have made promis to be hoped that the announcement : cnous use of the lieu land scrip carries with it the assurance of a ; during the past year l" increase each speedy culmination of the project ' tie ir holdings in- Oregon. The year for other permanent improve ment. In fact the tax rate might be materially reduced and still sufficient funds could be obtained to pay for such a building. Not only this, hut 'every cent of the surplus would be paid by outside tax payers who may never even visit Crook county much less take an active hand in its upbuilding. The timber in the county has oc cupied its place ever since Crook county became such, and it is one of its greatest resources. Certain it is that it should not be removed without in any way contributing to the wealth of the county. Not only will the tax rate re main the same or less than at presunt, but current expenses should not increase over 10 per cent in each five vears while the valuation of taxable property will soar away over any figures which seem to be possible now. Even since the statement found on an other page was compiled the new irrigation company on the Des chutes" ri-er has beep capitalized for over two million and appropri ated a total of 210,000 acres which is 50.000 acres more than the am ount upon which the comparative statement was based. If a radical move is not made at once the people who should pay this tax will put their money in eastern banks and ventures and Crook county will fail to receive the amount which rightly belongs to her. More than this, the city of Prineville is entitled to this honor. The present building is wholly inadequate to accomodate the increasing county business and lime only adds to the in conveniences. Sooner or later a new court house will have, to be built and the move toward per manency should be made now. Furthermore it is not within the and that the vacillating rr.ethoi iand "mane oxciisi soured the community for nearly four years have finally been done away with. Needless it is to add that the Pilot Butte IVvelopenunt com pany was born wiih speculative purposes, and has died after a par ial realization oi its aspirations.
