.session business or elm tlie leiiisla
tnrs will stay at home. In other
word? when George 0. tits his
foot down on a proposition it i?
lift enough to hold its pocilion
without moving.
It ia probably just us well. Tile
state law makers played Hermann
with tin taxes m that now present
indications point to a iermanent
disaparance of this governnient
sential during the ensuing twelv
months. It will take more than a
. wave ef the wand and a sleight of
hand movement for next year's
taxes to make their appearance
and the governor proses that
tlie extra session shall devote its
entire time to rectifying mix
ed trick.
And the governor apparently is
right in the matter. Empty
treasuriat are not a verv solid
foundation upon which to main
tain the public institutions, and
the special session should confine
itself to this one pressing and para
mount need.
With an eye to economy in the
conduction of legislative affairs,
the governor has said, "a remedy
for the tax laws and nothing more,"
and the press and the people
generally are upholding him for
the reason that it would be poor
economy to convene tha legislature
to supply the state with funds and
have that same body drain the re
sources of the treasury with a pro
longed Kfsiou and perhajr a few
appropriations.
The governor has stated his
position very decidedly. It is to 1
hojied that he will not see fit to re
tract, and that the extra session,
if called, will patch up its bungl
ing job in a few days time and ad
journ. Then everyone will feel
better, the legislators, the governor
and the people.
capital is already lieing invested
to further the production from the
beds of ore w hich have ln-en un

The cinnabar properties in the
vicinity of Lookout mountain
have attracted the attention of
mining firms in Washington and
their money is now being expend
ed in an e ffort to prove the worth
of their conviction that Crook
county has a vast and undevelop
ed field of quicksilver within easy
reach. Besides this tliwe is a
ptactieallv unpnwiiected field of
coal which so far remains nn
iiisturneii, lint tlie operations in
the same stratum to the north and
e.ist will sooner or later Ih brought
to War upon the deposits lving at
the eastern edge of Crook county.
As a prominent mining man of
this section has stated, "Crook

seareh has brought the light of day

sources. And with tlie activity
which has begun along the John
Day river and other sections in
the immediate vicinity, it begins
to look us if the fever would spread
until it reached the confines oi
this county. The wise acres pre
dict more or less excitement in
this portion of interior Oregon
next year, and it is safe to say the
most sanguine ore not basing their
expectations on anything short of
sulistantial foundations.
