Just how our friend Holder
manages to class The Journal as a
man we do not know. However,
when the process of evolution does
effect the change, if it ever doe,
and The Journal has passed
through the transitory stage and
becomes a "man" our sineerest
hopes arc that it will lie a man and
not a tool. At the present time it
is the people's paper and is read
hy more people than any publica

Ex-Governor T. T. Geer was in

WASTED A STATEMENT.
In a recent issue of the Portland
Oregonian there was published an
itemized statement of the receipts
and disbursements of the Heppner
Relief Committee, in which it was
shown that Portland's contribution
to the Heppner relief fund was
$2500.00, while many individual
and community contributions were
not mentioned. 1 his is a source
of considerable surprise to the
citizens of Prineville, and presum
ably to many other sections of the
state. This citv contributed over
IjOO.OO to the Heppner relief fund,
to be expended through the Port
land committee, and doubtless
many other communities contribut
ed a sufficient amount to far exceed
the whole sum sent by Portland.
Now what the jwople of the
Northwest want is an itemized
statement of the receipts and dis
bursments of the Portland com
mittee. If the fund sent by the
citizens of Prineville has not been
appropriated to the ue intended,
viz: the relief of the Heppner suf
ferers, we want it back, as it will
be a nucleus for a local relief fund
of our own. Portland has no
right to misappropriate the fund.
sent for this siiecutl purpose, and
if more funds were sent than were
needed, do as the people of Hepp
ner did, and return them to the
contributors. Let the Portland
Relief Committee publish a state-
