He had walked down the main street to o point near Bridge creek and direct ly in front of the Wee Campbell livery stable, where be was amus ing himself by shooting at the till- fercnt objects floating downstream. In this action several people nar rowly missed being hit by the fly ing bullets, and a 'shcepshearer by the name of Milt Dehaven, hearing several con. plaints took it Uon himself to go to where l'uett was doing his gun play and asked him to desist. As Dehaven had gone prepared to enforce hi" demand, taking a 30-.'K) Winchester. Puctt acquicsed, and went back up the Main street, but soon returned, and finding Pchavcn still standing where he bad left him,, told Inn. that he had conic back to shoot it out with him. In the meantime, Dehaven had loaned hiB gun up against tho fence a few tos away and in answer, toJJ Puelt, to wait at least until he had hit gun in bis hand. Having emptied his gun, he etartcd back tip to the hotel, where lie got more ammunition, lie succeeded in walking back to the scene of the shooting, a distance of about SO yards, and then dropjied dead. Puett, in the meantime, had shot Marshal Stiles in the thigh, inflict ing a wounu that ia pronounced total by the attending physicians. Tho postal receipts during tno fiscal year ending June 30th was $2781.41. The last six months business was $1495.74, ,ia compared with $1285.07 for tire proceeding six months. Prinevillo's postal receipts and money order business exceed those of any other in Oregon of the same accredit ed population.
