THVBdOAY,
MAY W, 1903
Senator Beveridge predicts that
Japan and Russia will he at wsr
within six months. Of wtiw the
senator may le entirely mistaken,
hut his opinion is founded on elose
study and oliservation, and it is
said that he values it ahove every
thing else.
The Oregoniau's treatment of
outside correspondents is certainly
had and uncalled for. Not long
ago Ir. Perkins of Shaniko. sent
an article for publication relative
to the smallpox situation in his
city and hecausc it did not coin
cide with the views of the great
daily, it printed it minus llie re
vision due all correspondence, and
which it would gladly have given
it had it been of the Oregonian's
way of thinking. A few days
later a communication was sent
from our city lerwfy wri..n as a
correction to the grossly exagger
ated report printed by them nhout
the smallpox -in our city. This
was pent to them alwut two weeks
ago and has never been allowed
any of their valjiable spice. This
kind of policy is certainly narrow
minded and is deplorable. It
would vomit a buizard.
The fair at Portland is seriously
threatened by the Federated Trade
Unions, who recently passed reso
lutions condemning it and tlie half
million dollar appropriation set
aside for it. Work has been sus
pended hv the committee await
ing the outcome of the trouble,
and the object of the Fair is already
damaged to a certain extent.
When the Fair project was first
launched it was proposed purely
as a means of commemorating the
Lewis & Clark exjiedition and
advertising the progress
made by our great state, during
the century intervening. Petty
jealousies have sprung up mean
time, and these augmented by the
present labor trouble in Portland,
seriously threaten to damage the
great good that will naturally ac
crue to us all as a result of the
Lewis 4 Clark exHilion. Need
less to say the ae!on of the
State Federated Tiadr. Union is
condemned by all i minded
men, union and non-union, alike,
and it is to be hoped that their ac
tion will have no ultimate effect,
hut will be looked Usm merely as
a passing incident.
Another one of the few remain
ing pioneers of the earliest days of
Oregon history has passed away
-Mrs. Mary (jesner died at her
home, 401 isunimer street, last week
as the result of injuries leceived last
August. She was visiting a friend
in the country, and fell from the
steps, breaking her hip. Sine
that time she has been an invalid,
and suffered a great deal, and her
friends realized it was only a mat
ter of time until the end.
Deceased was born in Kentucky,
September 5, 1821. .She afterward
lived in Indiana and Ill.nnis.
where she was married, in 1 J J, to
R. A. Gesner, who preceded her
fifteen years ago, to the great U;-
yond. In company with her hus-
btnd, in IMS, she crossed tin
plains, and, coming direct to Oie
gon, settled on the Gesner dona
tion land claim, six miles east of
Salem, and she has since lived
there and at her home in this city.
Kight children' are left, Alonzo
Gesner, Beuzert Gesner, Mrs. T. C.
Davidson, Mrs. Sarah Gerowe and
Mrs. II. Rundlett, of Salem; Dr.
V. Gesner, of prineville; Mrs. J. L.
Munkers, of Ashland and Mrs. Ke
beka Haskell, of Chthalis, Wash
