Oregonian. RnltMilH Iblllilee of Weal em Deaertet Tho irrigation possibilities of the arid Went, especially that part of it included In tho great interior basin, once culled the tirent Ameri can Denert, are daily becoming more apparent. Surveys for rescr voir cites reveal tho fact that there nro many locations where water can be cheaply stored and uned for power and irrigation. Other sur- veyM bIiow largo tracts of good farming land favorably located for watering from there storago roser voirtt. A more detailed study In being made of llm amount of water each watershed will fiirninh, eK'cinlly thone on which there are good res ervoir sill's, and the losses of water from each. Under the direction of Mr. L. If. Taylor, resident hydro grapbiT of the Geological Burvcy at Heno, Kevadii, thirteen new utreaui gaging stations have been established in Nevada and eastern California. Three of thono are on Walker river ami branches, one on Carson river, six on Trucked river and tributaries, and four on the Humboldt mid its tributaries. The run off data from there and the other eight gaging stations on these streams, when they cover a period sufficiently long to Include the two extremes of runoff ,will bo of great value in determining the irrigation possibilities and designing the works on each. A dozen rain gages are to I located at Characteristic places in this section. These, with the eleven already in use there, will, with the aid of tho run-off data, render ascertainable the ratio of percipilation to run-off, and thus enable engineers to compute, from rainfall records, the run-off from adjacent auxilliary water sheds. Evaporations from the sur face and fluctuations of the surface level of some of the lurger lakes aro lwing meanuied, and losses in cident to storage of large bodies of water and losses from small bodies of running water are to be studied. During tlio hint season Mr. Taylor has been assisted by Prof. E. C. Murphy, of Cornell University. , 1 Nlrlkraa Hick I In. Iloy'a l:nr On lirtllor, The Ti'Cumsch Republican of a recent ditto contains the following: "An editur is a feller that runs a newspaper and soUf typo and smokes cigarettes, and sometimes cushcs, He is an offal silo on irons day and When bene got ink on his hands and face and gets mad when a subscrber stops his paper and don't pny up. A editur has to be a offal good (idler and rite nil kinds of lyes about people who don't desorvo it. Editurs aro al ways in a good umor generally when they ain't on their year about something and they change their mind more times in a day than a mule can kick. They cun say some beautiful things about new married folks and wipe big tuars of grief any time one is sick with colic or any old thing. My paw is a editur. My paw says mc'rchanls is bigger liars than editurs. Home times merchants soz they (eel good twards you and will patron ize you and then put a big ad in the other fellers paper and say nary doggon word to you. That makes paw mad. The funniest tiling I ever saw was paw hugging the ollicc devil she was a girl and he turned instanter when I eum in and begin to fummel around the forms and look real mean. He said ho was justifying the forms and fixing to go to. press or some thing. Sumtimcs I think I'd like to lie an editur when I got growed up." A Horrible Outbreak. A pitched battlo took placo at Wright's coal works, in Raleigh County, last evening, between 100 United Mates Deputy Marshals jnd Deputy Sheriffs, under Chief Deputy Cunningham, of Charles ton, and Bheriff Cook, of Raleigh County, and 250 striking miners who refund! to permit Federal of ficers to nerve injunction papers. Tho posse met witli a mob aimed with Winchesters, wlio defied ar rest and service of papers. They followed defiance with hostilities, opening fire on the deputies at once. The deputies responded and tlio buttle raged furiously for sever alminutes, Eight strikers were killed, 12 wounded, two mortally; one colored Deputy Marshal was killed, two wounded, and Special Offer Howard Smith, of the Ches apeake & Ohio Railroad was shot in the arm. A striker slipped up on him aud fired. Hmith dodged the bullet intended for his heart and received it in his arm. He theiy killed the striker with a pistol. After the posse had repulsed the minerB they followed up their ad vantage, and secured the arrest of over 10(3, who were brought to Iieckley under guard. Deputy Cunningham and posse have gone back to the scene and will arrest every one implicated. An ugly strike in progress is the cause of the trouble.
