On Wednesday lasf Prof, 8,
Smith, of our publio school, proved
the fact that cigarette pujier con
tains a deudly poison, and this (net
should convince our young men
and hoy) that the hubit jdiould not
be induWd in by them. Parents
who rend this should call the at'
trillion ol their sons to the fact, as
it may prevent them becoming
"cigarette fiends," ae habitual
smokers arc generally culled.
Prof. Smith has noticed that the
Mive who sinoko cigarettes are
usually from one to four years be
hind in their studios as compared
with boys who have better sense
and do not indulge in tho habit,
and this fact may have caused
Prof. Smith to make his cxjicij
nicnt, .Some timo ago ho secured a
u nc li of cigarette papers and
laced them in a test tube filled
with water from the scIkniIIioubc
yard. On Wednesday ol last week
a mouse was caught in a trap at
the school house nnd Mr. Smith
concluded to convince himself if
the statement that cigarette paper
Contains deadly poison was true.
The mouse was allowed to drink
some of the water in which the
c'garette paper hud been soaked
and in less than ten minutes the
animal was dead.
Prof. Smithtook advantage of
this opportunity to deliver a lec
ture to the pupils of the school.
The experiment he made was ex
plained and the dead mouse was
exhibited in different rooms, and
it is sincerely hoped that the
warning given will convince all
that cigarette smoking is danger
ous and should not be indulged in.
