Mill then, topographs. Tlie Grand Canyon, formerly reached only by itage route over a desert country ,has recently been accessible by a branch lino of tho Santa Fe route from Williams, and during the one year that thin road hud been in operation the Canyon ban been visited by thousands of tourists. In the imigiiilicence of its propor tioiiH ami the g'amletir of its scenic KttriK'tioiiH tho (Canyon bids air to rival both the Yellowstone I'ark and tho Yosemito Valley. Tho United Stated Geological Survey expects to publish a scries ofatlus sheets covering tho entire extent of the Grand Canyon proper and considerable areas of the high plateaux on cither Hide. The flrnt of these sheets to be known an the liright Angel, is nearly completed and will be available to the public some time next ummer. It in cludes almost all of the scenery visible from the Bright Angel Hotel, familiar to every visitor. The Coloiado traverses from East to west the quadrangle represented by this sheet and divides it almost symmetrically. The new map will be on a scale of ont utile to the incli and the contour interval will be SO feet. It will show every pin nacle, spur, and gully in its true proportion and each line of cliffs and terraces may be traced along the canyon walls. The ' dimension? of the Grand Canyon have been the subject of much discussion ever since it was first explored. It may therefore be of interest to give tome figures Uicen from this new survey. The average width from rim to rim does not excend 10 miles throughout the Kaibab, or widest section of the Canyon, and frequently narrows down to 8 miles. The river docs not occupy the middle of the gigantic trough, but flows at a distance vary ing between 1 and 3 miles from the south sido. Practically all of the magnificently sculptured pinnacles and menu (the so-called temples) lie north of the river, and at din lances of from 5 to 7 miles from the view points usually visited by tour ists. The depth of the Grand Catv yon, in one way, lias been over stated, in another understated Measured from the south rim the total depth is considerably less than a mile. From the rim at the liright Angel Hotel, where the altitude is C806 feet above sea level, to the highwater murk of the river at the foot ot the tourist trail, the drop is 4'.'10 feet. The highest point on the south rim at the Grand View Hotel is H feet, about 4yX) feet above the river From the north side, however, the drop to the water level averages considerably over a mile, and in many places even exceeds GOOO feet. It may be stated in a general way that the north rim is from 1000 to 1200 feet higher than the south, thus producing that high, even sky line so striking in all views obtain able by the tourist. The figures here given are based on spirit levels run in connection with the map work. They are the first that have ever been run to the bottom of the chasm, and the high standard of accuracy maintained throughout will cause them to be considered authoritative and final. A Typical South African Store, O. R. Larson, of Buy Villa, Sundays Biver, Cape Colony, conducts a store typical of Sou III Africa, at which ci n be purchased anything from the pro verbial "needle to an anchor." This tore is situated in a vsllsy nine miles from the n"srt railway station and about twenty-five miles from the near est town, Mr. Larson says: ''I am favored with the custom of farmer within a radius of thirty miles, to many of whom I have supplied Cham berlain's remedies. All testify to their value in a household where a doctor's advice is almost nut of the question. Within one mile of my store the pop ulation is perhaps sixty. Of the, within the psit twelve mouths, no lens thsn fourteen have been absolutely cured by Chamberlain's Cough Reme dy. This must surely be a record.' For isle by all (IniKnists. , Mutinous In 1'n ion County. Within the past three years 200 Mormons have settled in the Grande Rondo Valley. They have purchased some of the choic est farms on tho Sand Kidge, and divided Ihem up into 20, '10, and HO acre tracts, and are raising sugar beets principally. In the city of La Grand they have a com modious church building with a seating capacity for about 500 people. They own the beet sugar factory, have recently purchased the plant of the Grande Rondo LimiW Com pany at I'erry, by far the most complete sawmill in Kastern Ore gon, the Steel Spur sawmill, the Hilgard planer and the available timber near these mills. They have a grocery store, paint store, jewelry, loan agent, real es tate men, lawyers, and other busi ness men in La Grande, besides a thriving community at Alicel and Union. They are industrious, frugal folks and cultivate their farms to the highest degree. A Might of Terror. "Awful anxiety was felt for the wid ow of the brave General Burnhani of Machias, Me., when the doctors ssid she would die from Pneu mooia before niorning"wiit Mrs. ft. H. Lincoln, who attended her that fearful night, but she begged for Dr. King's New Discovery, which hsd cured her of Consumption, After taking, she slept sll night. Further use entirely cured her". Trahan camo over from the Matoles Saturday and re' ports a lot of timber buyers in that section of the county, and that there was some timber changing hands at 110 per acre. While this may be a little high for some of the timber in this county, it will have the tendency to cause a demand for stiff prices among tho holders of timber There is no doubt that our timber is worth all that can be got for it, and the time is not far distant when we will have the only con siderable area of pine timber in the world.
