Timber Will be ValunUc. "There is one thing I want to impress upon the people of Ore gon," said Hon. Thomas If. Tongue liefore ho left Portland for home, "and that is for them to he careful not to throw away their timber lands, says the Portland Journal. They are fast becoming of great value, and the day is not far distant when their owners will fie as independent as the million aires. That day will be when the lumbering men are knocking at their door, ready 'and willing tr pay any price for this timber. "Do you know that here in the Northwest are the virgin forests of the country; here is practically the only place in the United States where can be found timber un touched by the Woodmen. Nearly every other section has been cut over, and now the crop is what might be called second growth. "In Wisconsin they are paying $10 or f 15 per thousand for stump age. Do you know what that means here? Why onclulf that price is a fortune to the man who holds a 100 acre claim. If he has that claim 15 years hence, I hon estly believe that that he will not have lo worry about his future life. "Xow in those states that aie called lumbering states the tim ber is small and we here would not use it for fire wood. Some time ago while in the East I read an account' of lumber mill be ing burned, and the newspaper htH great, stress ';,oti 'he distinc tion of a piece of lumber 27 inches broad -and two inches thick. Trees yielding lumber over 18 inches broad had almost entirely disaji peared. Now what do we in Ore gon think of a thing of that kind. We can get scrub pines that will yield larger lumber than that. There is no use talking. I do not j like to si'e our people throw away grand opportunities like this. "Another thing. I think there is an unwarranted waste of IinnW I around the mill yards. Some day I that same refuse they throw away will lie as valuable as the great timbers they are now turning out. I I with there could he something j done to prevent this thought!) ' waste." I j A Sew I se fur Tapers. ' We have heard of newspapers jkil'ing political ambitions, turning ' people from wrong to right, being used for bustles and many other things, but here's ii new onu; Thus, j A.
