This measure affecU quite a num
ber of old soldiers of Eastern and
Western Oregon who have been
needing this assistance since the
early '50s. Though it is late com
ing, this help will materially light
en the load for numerous old vete
rans. Hon. Titos. H, Tongue,
who has just been elected to an
other term in the House of Rc
nseniativw, is working industri
ously for this bill and it is thought
Ir'suiiliring efforts with able assist
ing fron Senator Mitchell that
I the measure is receiving such
favorable recognition. Now that I
Hon. J. N. Williamson has been
elected to Congress and being both
a political and swial friend to
Mitchell and Tongue, all will work
in perfect harmony, and the Oregon
delegation will again have that
potency in Congress it had when
we were represented by Dolph,
Mitehel' and Ilerminn, when the
Oregon delegation was counted

Flra at Grass Valley.
At 2:30 o'clock last Wednesday
morning Grass Valley was visited
by the fire fiend. The fire started
in the rear of and between the
building occupied by George Cle
ment's grocery store and K. M.
French's billiard hall. In addi
tion to these two building Patter
sons saloon anil the Journal buil
ding were destroyed before the tire
could be gotten under control.
Every citizen of Grass Valley turn
ed out and worked irith a will and
their work together with the still
uess of the night, was all that pre
vented the entire business pi ton j
01 the town from now being in ash-
es. This was the first serious fire
this beautiful little city ever h:il
ana it is to be hoped it is the lut?t.
No doubt that the citizens vill now l
arouse themselves and put in aj
svstem of water works, for which i
during the past year has been agi
tated by its citizens, though as ye;
nothing has been done. The edi
tor of the Leader extends his sym
pathy to the losers in the fire, as
well hb to all the citizens of Grass
Valley and hope the losses af least
are partially covered by ini-uiwice.
