camp on Squaw creek Sunday and re
ports the crop of lambs as excellent.

There was a practice game of base
ball played on the fair grounds Sun
day and the boys showed up very well
tor the amount of prncticu they have
had. There will no doubt be a match
game on the Fourth as one of the at
tractions of that day.

The spring has been so backward that
growth of all kinds was greatly re

J. H Gray was down from his
Crooked nver ranch the first of the
week receiving the fine Hereford bull
that he purchased from the bunch of
white faced Missourians that were
brought here by Scott & March. It
was a fine animal, two years old and
weighed nearly 1GO0.
Hon. W. P. Ready and wife hare
taken up their residence in Malheur
county, Where Mr. K. haa charge of
the oil drilling outfit. He has put on
two shifts and is running the drill
day and night, pushing the work until
it is definitely settled whether oil ex
it in that section or not. Muro

looking after stock and found a deu of
coyotes which ho proceeded to dig out

P. B. Davis, of Sisters, Crook coun
ty, who lias been in the Willamette
valley several weeks, was in the city
last night on his way home. Mr. Da
vis snid there was considerable inquiry
in the Valley about Eastern Oregon
land, and a good many of the old set

R. M. Powell was down from hit
lambing camp Monday morning and
iepo:ts that from one band of 701 ewes
he has marked 771 lambs and from hii

lambs, lhis ought to satisfy any
sheep man.
There are a large number of people
in this county that would do well to
avail themselves of the opportunity
to take up timber claim before it is
all gone. There will be a rush iu here
in a short time and there will be no
timber to take six mouth from this
date, a there was a large amount
taken with lien land scrip and there
has been a considerable quantity al
ready filed on by outside people. Fifty
claim have been taken during the
past two week.
Rev, II. C. Clark left Wednesday for
North Yakima, where he goes to at
tend the. district conference of the
Methodist church. He was accompa
nied by his wife and Misses Mary Sal
omon and Ethel Swearengen, who go
to attend the Epworth League con
vention a delegate from this place.
Miss Salomon will visit Portland be
fore she return. In consequence of
his absence Rev. Clark will be unable
