In hla mtonUhment at thla unex

Ihnt had evidently been at n Iklnpr the

thii alflrtlinR alght, when lie heard a.
Iremendoita roar l little way to the
left, and raw another lion even blirver
than the others that had just killed a
b'tck, and was standing over Ita prey.
There wna no time tn unstrap h's
crhine, no time for anythin". The
instinct which prompts the locomotive
driver, when he aces a he-nd-on col
lision comlnor, to shut off and jump,
led 1111 to frive one convulsive shove
nt the steerim? lever and leap clear of
the vehicle. H's idea was to tret Into
the frinire. of timber and climb a tree;
but he had already passed most of the
trees. The nearest was a larjre old
trunk that hid fallen portly over and
lay nt an anfle of tS decrees or less,
Its top lodtrcd In another smaller tre
. which had arrested Its fall, and acted
as a prop to hold It up. He mnde a
dash fur this inclined tree, and ran up
15 or 20 fret to where a larire branch
rose Tertically. Twisting his body
nimbly around this branch, Hill
glanced back to see what the liona
were doinjf.
t.nckily for him, they were being
tuiermiufd by the motor-carriage.
The miicliiiie was still trointr, and
seemed fully to occupy their attention
as a new nnd very dubious sort of
gume, The movements of the little
automobile were aotnewhat hmirhnlile.
The hard shove to left which Hill had
given the steering handle enuurd the
machine to dpscribe a tyrant circuit
nut mi the veld bevotid the trees.
There were thorn-husnes, mm, dry
trenns and numbers mf stones in the
open; hut the 1, it tie Ajnx was accus

scribing a circle and coming round
again, a,s If looking for Its master and
loath to leave him behind.
The lions were clearly mystified,
alike from what they aw, heard and
niiellrd. They backed off and came
round In the rear of the machine, rj in j
It with doubt and disfavor. '.Vhun it
turned they doubled to the rear of it
again; and the big Hon with the buck,
when hi- saw It coming in his direc

with an angry growl bounded off out
of the truck of the queer nonstrotit.
Then he stood up end roernl af:an.
Two of Ihe other lions w?re not fully
grown. Apparently they did mil quite
liare to spring upon the lifelike yet
malodorous creature, but kept follow
ing It, charging close tip behind It at
one moment, then tailing Iick.
The other larger Hons or lionesses
auuaMed r.l a distnuce in the grass and
watched It.
Stones and bushes were constantly
deflrcting th direction of Ihe motor
carriage; and before long It ron Into
another larger bush, or clump of
loiih.s. titnt brou"lit It to a standstill,
although It continued pufliugar.il push

For some time the Hons watched it,
but grrw listless or Indifferent to the
performance, ar,d went out toward the
black-mailed ilon who the mien.

the tree-trunk. Only one, however,
could approach the diflieult point or
passage around the upright branch;
nnd whenever a paw was thrust above
Ihe brunch, Hill hammered it with the
c'.ub so vigorously aa nearly to
crush it.
Two uf the llona were already bleed

to have had enough of the effort to
scale the tre-trunk; but they had be

they would leave the place that night.
